audigy platinum wont open playcenter

whenever i click on the icon to open the program, it doesn't- it just sits there
also can't open creative recorder.
Things done so far: 1. Attempted to re-install software but couldn't (see note below)
2. Downloaded: AUD_EAX4DRV.exe drivers
3. Upgraded to Playcenter 3.02.52
4. Attempted to open from start menu and from icon in program files > creative
(thinking maybe the desktop shortcut file was corrupted)
5. Checked device mgr for hardware conflicts
6. OS win xp pro
NOTE: could not un-install software using add/remove programs on control panel. whenever I attempted, I would get error msg: “an installation support file could not be installed. the system cannot find the file specified”

Any help would be appreciated. Anyone know of a 3rd party software that would uninstall it?
Thanks in adv

hi fivestring
Creative can be a bit difficult to get going.
There is a utility called 'driver cleaner’
that will remove creative drivers. It used to be
a freebie, but now they want $9.00 bucks for it.
I have a copy of the freebie - but I’m out of town
for the next week.
The other thing you can do is -
remove the drivers manually by clicking on the
soundcard (under Device manager, to get a list of
the drivers being used i.e emu10k whatever) -
and delete those drivers (don’t put them in the re-cycle
bin) Remove the Creative folders.
Then search the registry for ‘creative’ and remove
any entries. Then try an install.
Personally, I do not use PlayCenter - so I never installed
it on XP. I do have it installed on a 98SE disk.
Still never use it.
Hang in there - it will install correctly once you
clean it up.

I have had similar problems with different software in Win 3.1, 95, 98FE, 98SE, ME, NT, XP. Somehow the uninstall info gets corrupted during install due to no fault of your own and then you are stuck. If I was smarter than I am I would point you to a registry setting that just disables your problem.

Creative Labs only seems to have help with the Audigy Platinum back to Windows 98:

Errors with Creative PlayCenter

If Creative PlayCenter is causing errors or lockups, we recommend you check that you are using the latest drivers for your CD Rom drive before doing anything else.
Also ensure you are using the latest bus mastering IDE Controller drivers for your motherboard.
If you have a Creative DVD drive, ensure you are using the latest drivers for the unit.
Try reinstalling the Winaspi.dll and Apix.vxd Windows system files from your Windows’98 CD:.
- Install your Windows '98 CD into your CD Rom Drive.
- Go to Start - Find - Files or Folders
- Go to the Name and Location tab, and type the following in the Name field:*.cab
- In the Containing Text field, type: Winaspi.dll
- In the Look In field, choose the drive letter for the CD ROM drive which holds the Windows 98 CD.
- Select Find Now.
- When you have found the file, right click on it.
- From the drop down menu choose Extract.
- Browse to the directory where the file is to be extracted: C:\Windows\System directory.
- Click extract.
- Repeat the same procedure for the file Apix.vxd and extract it to the C:\Windows\System\Iosubsys directory.
- Reboot your system
