and so you have been, keep it up

Maaszy
Just to further derail this thread, I claim that my lowly Presonus Bluetube (I stuffed in cheap Sovtek 12AX7 because the stock tube was DOA) sounds pretty dang classy when I add my AKG C 4000 B in front of it, and then add wifey in front of that. Just a hint of cheapo tube drive, then straight into soundcard and it sounds GOOD even before you start tweaking to fit the result into a mix.
IMO, YMMV and BLAHBLAHBLAH, of course.
t.
teryeah,
Indeed that was one of my “cheap” alternatives.
Even after I gave up the firewire interface on my presonus firestation, I kep it racked and use it for the tube preamps.
It may be cheap, but it won’t crackle or drop out on you, the pot’s are all solid and smooth, and it has good headroom.
I suspect that parts spec’d jave a lot to do with it right?
Those old console pre’s that cost a fortune aren’t anything special circuit-wise. They were very nicely spec’d on parts though. That’s why Seventh Circle can reproduce the Neve’s API’s etc. The circuits are well documented. The hard part is getting all those hard to find pparts together. They are pure DIY !!!
I suppose you could take that Berry (with it’s very close cicuitry) and replace parts until you have the same quality, but I’ve researched that. Seventh Circle is not making much on those kits boys and girls. It all boils down to which parts get stuffed inside. The input and output transformers are the most influencing factor, and the costliest.
Next are the controls. (pots in Berries switches and fixed resisters in the clones) Those aren’t P & G Faders in there…
and the cheaper ones that Berry uses fail quicker.

If one is handy with a soldering iron, one can get Neve quality pres for under $500.00 per channel |
One word:
Bellari.
That is all.

Oh and "he" and the "reviewer" is a hobbyist who thinks he gets pretty good results with what he has (mainly budget gear). Would you agree Tom? You've heard it. Mark |
Did someone mention P&G Faders?
P&G
They make lots of stuff that will fade things.
Phoo, you are a total mess: I love it !!!

Here: read some other opinions:
Snob or not
Remember that picture of the Berry mixer IS mine, and I reall did try to like it.
I’m serious, BTW somebody make me a decent offer and it’s yours, otherwise I’m donating it charity.
Hi.
I’ve used Berry products and was actually impressed with the build quality. I have never personally had any problems with the stuff but have heard from a store owner I know that 1 in 8 Berry products has a problem, I guess I was just lucky.
In the same price range, with no QA issues and a solid reputation, I would recommend Tapco products (Mackie made in China). Same price point as Berry but better quality components. I have the 6306 mixer. If the drop dead gorgeous looks don’t get you then you should open it up. It has ALPS pots (!). I was floored when I saw that. Alps is the leader in quality potentiometers. THe only thing I wasn’t impressed with was the connectors. But so far no problems… it’s been about 1 year and it runs like new.
Tapco also makes a few products worth looking into.
My 2 cents.
T3K
Bill, what would count as a reasonable offer? Can I trade my Auto Com for it?
BTW, if the charity offer is serious, there was an audio school opening out in Oregon or Wasington state or something that was looking for donations a while back.
Tom,
You have heard my work. It was done on budget gear. I am not opposed to budget gear, just junk that is sold as budget gear. Berry is very pretty and if you don’t mind one in eight being broken, then more power to you. I wonder how anyone (not you in particular) this would act if someone told them that their daughter had a one in eight chance of getting knocked up on a date.
There is a charity in Chicago called Medtar (www.medtar.com ) Rex Jones is a friend of mine. He runs this Charity. You can check on this if you want. They collect guitars and musical equipment and give them to children with long term and terminal illnesses at PSL hospital in Chicago. I have already donated a Fender Telecaster and Gibson Steel guitar to them. That’s where this will go. They will use it and be very happy. They have a dedicated tech to fix it with an unlimited budget supported by people like me and you who a care about the real things in life.
I’m truly sorry I upset everyone at this forum by trying to let them know that Berry is ripping them off while there are truly inexpensive gear (like Belari and others) that actually will perform and not break. I will not bother anyone again with this silly idea that gear, regardless of cost, should not break without abuse.
To all the folk who worship Berry and the ir product line, I am so happy you are satisfied. P.T Barnum is happy he is proved right again, too.
Tom, you are a good guy, really !!!
You take it easy.
Phoo, Lear Jet, Limey (missing in action) and Mac (at Audio Minds)< Bubba Gump and a few others are a great bunch, too. I will not miss the rest of the Lemmings here.
Flavio, I still dig your cheap, yet relaible software and will continue to monitor this site in lurk mode, waiting for it to become stable again. I wil be MORE THAN HAPPY to again give you both financial support by my meager 24 bit purchase
and spread the word to anyone needing a REAL DAW solution.
(Much) later all !!!
Hey, Bill, you’re a good guy too! I loved that $9000 Berry story. Like others who commented, I’m still puzzled how one could spend that much on such inexpensive gear. “Hey, look, I have FORTY COMPRESSORS.”
And I’m still looking for someone to take my Auto Com.
edit: the medtar.com thing is great. That is genuine charity in action. Beautiful.
shrug
I don’t think a gear discussion is worth leaving a forum for, and that tapeop thread was a beauty.

Mark,
In the 2 weeks since you started this thread, have you had a chance to fool around more with this preamp-I don’t suppose you have had the opportunity to try a female singer with your preamp?
I am not really interested in stirring up the whole debate again, just curious to see what impressions you have after 2 weeks.
Thanks,
Doug
Thanks, I’ll be waiting.
