Is it a reasonable deal??
Hi You Guys:
I see this as a way to get into Vista and All for a little more than $200.00 …
I think the shipping is included…
I’ll check. I need a monitor and a few other things…
The DVD/CD Drive looks like it could be replaced/upgraded…
Am I chasing good money after bad… ?
Remember, this is a Canadian Offer…
Tiger Direct…
Toronto warehouse
It has sort ta taken my attention…
We pay some 13% sales tax on top of the final price…
That… I’ll check…
as well…
Bill…
Only thing that stuck out to me is Vista Home Basic. I have it on one machine and Vista Home Premium on another. Basic is pathetic - premium is good.
I think I’d stay away from that deal Bill. That thing has the VIA C7-D processor on board. Reviews I have read put performance way, way down on the low side of acceptable. I’d be scared of it for DAW work. Might be okay for a internet/email/word processing box though.
My two cents…
D
The guy that wrote the review said something regarding Vista
and it’s (the
machine’s) slow behaviour to it-or-something…
Could that be what he was referring to ?
It appears that it a Genuine Vista install
BUT No disk…
I’m not a “Gamer”…
I’m more of a Utility user…
Well, you know…
And I’d use it as a replacement-to-or along with this Intel P-111 that I have here… AND more for testing the n-Track v6 as it develops…
If I spring for this thing, I’d maybe, add a decent DVD/CD writer and maybe, add a Hard Drive to it, as well…
I’d say the graphics card is acceptable…
Well…
There’s a “SLOT” in there to add an Audio Card…
Whatever…
What does $200.00 buy in this Day-and-Age ?
Does it sound like I’m
“Hooked”…
A growing Boy has to have Toys…
I haven’t jumped in with both feet yet…
[EDIT] Hi D I hear you loud-and-clear… I’ve always been an Intel/ASUS user… So in that regard I’d be upset if this thing didn’t measure up… Well… You know… I don’t…
It’s great to get feedback…
Bill…
I don’t think you will be happy with that deal Bill. If you want to stay on the inexpensive side, yet still get a decent machine, you should check http://www.ascendtech.us/customkititems.asp?kc=DTDEL530E45002G. It is a 2.2ghz core duo machine with 2gig ram and a 500gb sata hard drive. The video is only basic but good enough for office apps. It is a bit more than $200 at $379, but I think you might find it much more servicable. It includes Vista Home Premium and a DVDRW. I personally hate Vista, but it will soon be the only game in town (unless you move to Linux.)
Good luck,
Mike
PS…
you could always build your own, but it would probably cost more for the same hardware and software.
Thank you Gents for your replies to this idea I have…
I think I’ll step back a Pace-or-So and take another breath…
What’s the saying…
?
A fool and his money is soon parted…
?
I believe that the requirements I’d place on that machine would soon leave me more than upset with the monetary layout… it takes to land it here…
I’ve thought about the Sweetwater Deals more than several times…
For anyone who isn’t aware…
They produce a series of DAW/Machines that they stand behind and maintain
on line…
The only thing is you have to install a Hi-Speed Internet connection for them to to be able to maintain it’s operation…
I think…
Thank you again…
for that dose of reality…
Bill…
Hi Again Gents:
Dr. Guitar…
I’ll be looking at the link you posted in your reply…
I haven’t been able to get to it yet…
BUT…
I will…
Thanks…
for the link…
However, I see this in my mail from them today…
Tiger Direct
Again…
no shipping charges under 50 lbs…
in Canada…
CDN Funds and all…
I don’t think there is any Operating System with this package…
Does this look any better for the money.
?
OR…
is this a come-on…as well…
??
Bill…
That is a pretty decent looking system for the buck. That is a 2.4ghz quad processor (4 cpus!) with 2gb of memory. If you added a second hard drive to that system, it should be able to handle just about any DAW you would throw at it. There is no OS as far as I can tell, but you can always buy a copy of XP or make the move to linux with Ubuntu 8.04 (or any variety of linux you like). And the software is free…
Just a thought,
Mike
EDIT:
I went back and saw that it does NOT include any video (either on board or as an add in card) nor does it include cooling options for the CPU or firewire I/Os. This could be good or bad depending on how you wanted to go from there (ie. ultra quiet CPU cooling, basic or extreme video…etc…)
Thanks Doc:
It almost looks like a starting point for a machine that is good distance above where I am with the setup I have been using for a number of years…
I need space for a modem Graphics card Audio card and I’d like to install a Startech ATA/RAID card in keeping with the old machines I have…
That will allow me the use of installing 4 Hard drives…
e.g. 160 - 250 gig ATA type/ capacity drives…
They seem to stream audio files on the machines I have now… up-to-and-including the number of tracks that I import to the timelines …
here…
I’ll need an operating system…
Who knows ?
XP works for me up till now…
but VISTA is a choice… somewhere down the road.
I need a Processor Fan…
Instead of machines that ended up costing $2000.00 I might end investing maybe, $1000.00 to get this machine up-and-running…
Well…
?
Less the Audio Card…
??
It’s getting serious…
I might just make the move…
I have till the end of the month to mull this over…
BUT…
By then there will be a machine they’ll advertise that will blow the socks off this deal…
Bill…
[EDIT]
I forgot…
Video/Graphics is not at the top of my needs.
But Video Stability is…
I’m only working with 32 meg type cards now…
But a jump say into 128-or-256 meg. type cards wouldn’t be outta the question…
Maybe, a Dual Output type, as well…
I have a Matrox G-550 card that works quite well in this P-4 machine I have here…
BUT it’s a 32 meg. ram card…
