Cheap mics

cheap!

Stupid deal of the day is worth checking out:

It’s tough to beat that price… They make nice mics to place out in front of a choir… in an X-Y pattern…

Bill…

I just ordered two of them.

Yes there's warming.
They have headlines from NY Times and other papers.
From a hundred years ago - saying the same stuff.
And several times in between, it was global cooling.
Are we finished with this issue? I think so.
A year or two from now if you still believe this crap,
you'll look as stupid as they think we are now for
not buying into this (oh it's my fault for breathing).
Carbon foot(print) up their butt's.

They're not going down without a fight, and who knows what damage they can accomplish before people wise up.

That’s the scary part.
Really all this is - is setting up a big tax scam.
That’s the only reason Al (nothing personal against Al)
and his kind see the light of day.
Because they can be used to suck more money in the form of taxes
(now on a global scale) from those who can least afford it.
Whatever happened to thinking people?
Come on ‘Don’t get fooled again’

Not to interrupt your flights of fancy, gentlemen, but I had to mention today’s stupid deal (no, I have no relationship with the Fiend). A powerful 1-watt genuine fender amp:

Why is it that I feel compelled to buy this sort of thing and then put 5 mics on it to see if I can make it sound like a big old bassman in a good room?

so when you gonna fill us in on what it is that

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks TomS
:D

They do something different every day, mostly it’s not stuff I need, but every once in a while, for home recordists with little cash, there is something good. Gotta check first thing in the morning, however. :)

As to what I need very badly, well, Poppa, you’ll have to wait, but it is not music related, more a father-son-grandson-uncle project. Or maybe a grandfather-father-brother-son project. Well, anyway, lineal male relative project. Unless you are looking at it from the perspective of the youngest in the set. Really, lineal only from the perspective of the eldest member of the set. Hrm.

lol - Oh, like kinda how I really need my brother and his son and my son to help me build a greenhouse but I don’t have the cash?
That’s mine anyway.

Yep, just like that only different. :agree:

Got the order confirmation yesterday, but still no word about the mics being shipped. I read every review of the MXL 603S I could find on the internet, and the consensus seems to be it’s at its best recording acoustic guitars. Someone raved about how good the mic is on a mandolin. Seems like it’s not the ideal candidate for drum overheads, though some people liked them for that. If they get around to shipping them to me, I’ll record something and post it.

That price is tough to beat and they are bound to be useful for something. The best deal I ever got into for mics (and it may still be available?) is a set from Audio-Technica that pairs an AT2020 LDC with an AT2021 SDC for $149. The 2020’s are very nice on just about anything an LDC is suited for. The 2021’s work well for acoustic instruments, room mics, overheads and even vocal’s for the right singer. A true bargain. One of the best, if not THE best bargain LDC’s is the RODE NT-1 series. Fantastic LDC mic for less than $200. We have a couple of AKG Perception 200’s for choir mics at church. The NT-1A smokes them IMO. BUT and it’s a BIG BUT, the finest mic in the world will sound like poo if A) You have really crappy pre-amps. B) You place them poorly.

Just a couple of thoughts for yun’s…

D

PS I liked the AT2020/2021 set so well I bought two them. A pair each of some really fine microphones for three hunnert bux ain’t too shabby…

Shipped (the mics). I’m a sucker for cheap mics I can screw up (use on drums) and not be too worried about 'em if the get crunched.

UPS delivered my mics yesterday. I’ll try to put them to use sometime this weekend.

Yay!

Mine are out for delivery today. I doubt I’ll get to test them out for a while. I’m really happy with what I have for overheads so what I want to try them out as secondary for snare/kick snap first (think Bob Clearmountain).

Without a pad they won’t be much use for single drum mics, but that’s an experiment to be done as well.

I use 7 of 8 inputs for the drums as they are right now. That gives me one to put “somewhere”. In the past I’d sometimes set up a mic on the other end of the of the room, then limit the HECK out of it and mix it in very slightly as fill. The room is SO dry it adds a little liveliness. Yes, this would be mono, but that’s where a bit of fake MDA stereo comes in. It’s sort of a poor-mans impulse (SIR) kind of sound. It doesn’t work and isn’t needed unless the room so REALLY dry and VERY quite.

Put em up on a stereo bar in as a spaced pair, aimed em roughly at the 12th fret and the bridge from about a foot away, and here’s what I got. If you listen close enough, you might be able to hear the air conditoner and washing machine, but tried to reduce that. Only eq was high pass at 70Hz. (Also had the low cut engaged on the DMP3.) Sweetened it up a little bit, and added some reverb.
