Continuing to..

Rebuild XP Operating System

Hi Gents:

I continue to rebuild this XP Operating System…
Yesterday I got confident as to how the build is progressing…
SO
I installed n-Track as well as some other Drivers and applications in an effort to get some audio files imported
onto a timeline with the latest build of n-Track that I have downloaded…
n-Track registered just fine and all…

I was feeling pretty good about how the operating system is building-and-all…

THEN…
I needed and was looking for a break from this computer GrinD… SO…
I shut the machine down…
In an attempt to shut the machine down the operating system “Hung” at the “Windows is Shutting Down” screen…

There must be a Issue causing this HANG…
BUT…
What could I have done to the Build to Cause all this ????

Is there some easy FIX to this ????

Bill…

Fix is newcomputer.now :p

does it do this everytime you shut it down or only occasionally - occasional shutdown hanging is part of the windows OS (?)-if its occasional then thats par for the course - if its everytime then do as PW suggests - NEW ONE - keep away from those that start with D -

seriously - shut it down by pressing the ON button for 5 seconds while it is displsying the desktop or WORST CASE. pull the mains plug - on restsrt this should force disk checking - if it says windows has made chwnces to the operatiog system then windows may have rectified the fault - STRANGE BUT TRUE - forcing a shutdown can cure many problems that nothing else seems to fix -

:p Ain’t I one cheep Bluenoser…
 I continue to abuse myself and everyone within 24,000 miles of me…

I’ll learn one day after I have forgotten what I was trying to rebuild the computer for…
anyway…

There’s a Tech group up here…
I wouldn’t post the link…
BUT… I opened a post asking what it might be…
Before I realized where I was, I tried to retract the post…
I KnOw…
I’m gonna get about 50 pieces of spam mail from them…
They wanted 35.00 USD to answer the question…
BUT… if you can’t afford the repair you only need to pay 17.00 USD…

I’ve been looking pretty hard at that 5 lb stone hammer hanging on the wall…

Bill…

[EDIT]

Yes…
It hangs everytime I shut the machine down…
The tell-tail sign is…
A mouse curser is on the pop-up close screen…
the curser works till the very last second …
when the machine should power down…
You hear the drives stop…
at which point the Motherboard should power down…
However, the power does not shut the graphics card/Motherboard off…
Then, the curser hangs and the shutdown proceedure haults…

That’s when the Rum-and-Coke/Dark-and-Dirty
should be thrown into the machine…

What a waste that would be… for the Dark-and-Dirty…

Bill,

I’ve got an XP machine here that does it when all the others work just fine (? ?).

It’ll be a driver or utility I expect. I suggest you do a System Restore back to before you started loading the drivers etc, and then start applying them one at a time with a Shutdown after each one. When you’ve found the offending bit of software you’ll at least have a clue to know where to look - known problem, patch exists, later driver etc…

Hi Mark A:

Thank you for your reply…
I tried a system restore last evening…
Then I attempted several…
The response was…
No restore happened…
Not able to do a restore.
I know there is a page where Microsoft features can be turned off…
I don’t know how to open that page… I should know how to open it… BUT… I don’t think I turned off system restore… I wanted to remove n-Track and then JUST SEE…
Before n-Track was installed I loaded the m-Audio 192 drivers and the Creative Audio 24-bit Card Drivers… The WDM S/B 5.1 drivers were installed as the operating system/desk came up…

We may have a weather day today… It snowed all night…
I don’t know when it turned to ice and then rain…
It’s 5:20 here now…
We’ll know in another 1/2 hour if the schools will be closed…
You see, it’s been -20c here for a week now…
As the rain comes down it just turns to ice…
The road crews are out…
All we can do is wait-and-see what the call is gonna be…
It’s close to +10 here now…

Bill…

p.s.
I feel like I’m being whipped to have to work on this machine like I have been…
What a way to go…
:p
:p

Back Again:

Someone in their wisdom decided to call it a weather day…

All I have to figure out is…
what to destroy first on this machine…

I thought the drives shut down just before the HANG…
However, when I listened, the drives are still powered up…
The other thing I knotice is…
the operating system does not create a DMP file to send off to Billie when the machine is re-booted…
??? ?

Bill…

[EDIT]
I sitt’in here reading all the threads and I am listening to this machine humming away…

I don’t like the tune it’s singing… On the front panel of the BOX there is a little “Busy” LED… It’s blinking at the rate of about “Once-Every-Second”… OR about 60 Beats per second… I’m not doing anything with this machine as I browse the threads… What’s going … on… ????

You are to close to the North Pole. It’s probably a magnetic imbalance
of some type.

MS HELP DESK

What service pack level is that on? That is an old problem with XP and Windows 2000 Pro that was fixed AGES ago. Pop up to SP2 at least on XP.

Link to XP SP3

Hi Bubbagump:

Thanks for your reply…
You’re right…
Way back when I had all the service pacs installed as they were posted…
There is a utility that needs to be installed that addresses that issue…
I have it somewhere on a drive…
However, I have about 20 drives of different machines-and-builds and sizes laying around…
On this particular build I have Service Pac 3 installed…
BUT…
no Sp 1/SP 1.1 /SP 2.0 OR…
any of the Hot Fixes or whatever they were called…
I remember, on a previous build It was requested that I download and install all the Service Pacs.
So far, this is not requested…
As I remember, on another previous build I installed all these utilities and for some reason the utilities didn’t install-or-take-hold till the Microsoft request to download and install them was directed… OR…
So-it-seems…

Computers and Me…
We don’t tollerate one-another, very well…
I wish I knew more about them…
OR…
I wish they knew more about me…
:p

[EDIT]

Today…
is one brutal day here…
The sun is shining…
there is some cloud cover…
but…
very little …
The wind is blowing a gale…
the wind chill is so bad…
there is no heat from the sun, at all…
There’s a lot of weather going somewhere…

I abused the snowblower this morning…
The drive to the wheels failed…
AND… One of the shear pins broke… It wasn’t snowblower type of snow…
The temperature is on it’s way down…
It began to freeze sometime after 7:30…
this morning…
If you havn’t cleared the slush-and-snow by now…
It’s solid ice…
It was one nasty storm…
I have no idea what we did to deserve all this…
We got another 60 days left to winter…
:disagree:

[EDIT 2]

I don’t like the tune it’s singing… On the front panel of the BOX there is a little “Busy” LED… It’s blinking at the rate of about “Once-Every-Second”… OR… about 60 beats per minute…

Another possibility is to check if all your motherboard drivers/patches are as up to date as they can be. But I agree with the SP updates.

Anyway, Google is your friend, so here is a search list.

Hi technoid:

That is a nice comprehensive list of sites to browse…
Thanks for the Google search page…
I hope that over the weekend I’ll have FIXED this issue and get it behind me…
I find it strange that attempting to do a System Restore …
Windows does not allow me to restore the desk to an earlier date-in-time…

I’ve scaned these drives for any kind of viruses and malware and all…
using Panda Security 2009…
Nothing appears to show up after several scans…
I have all the latest virus definitions and my setup is Up-to-date…
and all…
with all that stuff…

As best as I can recall, I was begining to install the necessary audio equipment I normally have set-up on my setups…
I loaded the drivers for the m-Audio 192 audio card I got just before Christmas…
The drivers that comes with the card on the supplied CD has been updated to a later driver for XP and I updated the driver with the latest set of files…
Then I loaded the drivers for the SoundBlaster 24-bit audio card that is installed…
Then I loaded n-Track and registered the latest build I have…
It’s not the latest build the Flavio has posted but, it happens to be one of the beta builds…
of v6.0.2…
After the inital check-out I needed a break from this rock pile…

I can only think that there may be some conflict with the Audio Cards/Drivers that is installed on this build/machine…
However, it appears that there is no conflict with the cards…
drivers…
or…
IRQ assignments as much as the Operating System says…
AND… all the cards work when I select them in the Device Manager
and through the Desk of n-Track…
and all…

After that… That’s when I discovered the issue…

It’s been real busy around here this week…
along with all the rotten weather we had here…
as well…
It can’t
get any worse…
It can only get better…
I hope…

I can’t understand why I am unable to spend more time on this RoCk PiLe…
