Cool...Just got me a bass...

Ok…just got a good deal…ok I’m a cheapskate and I got a fretless bass very cheap from ebay for my birthday next week.

Presents and money gifts to ‘Spreadercraig, Sheffield, UK’ :)

Just got to learn to play now

I know the basic scales and I was just going to wing it…

Any pointers?

.

have it fretted.

.

Should be fun to learn - I was always too lazy to do fretless. I could if I had too I reckon.
Little time and practice - you’ll do great.

'bout time. should start on a fretted though.
remember the KISS principle. yes, i’m a hypocrite. that’s why i am where i am.

That’s great craig!

I likes to jump in at the deep end...

It's only a cheapo jobby but I'm rather excited.

Main problem I think I'll have is timing issues.

.

i have a old gibson ripper bass that someone ripped the frets out of,although i like the way it feels with no frets it is kinda hard
to play in tune ,all ya gotta be is a fraction off, even if your still between the lines, and you will hear it,
but other then that i would think you will have a blast
why do you think you will have time issues??
are you a guitar player to begin with,or is this your first whack at it?

I can only jokingly call myself a guitar player!!

I used to play bass in a band but that was way back when I was 12…
hhmmm I’m thinking I should have got a fretted one now…I was just thinking of nice slides…

Re. timing I just get the feeling I’m not good at hitting the notes at exactly the right time. Looks like I’ll be playing short sections then using the cut and paste

Oh well…its coming from eBay, it can always go back to eBay!!

.

The big issue is that you must be able to hear yourself while playing, and more importantly, you gotta learning to listen. As odd as that sounds there’s a lot more playing by feel than may seem obvious when playing fretted instruments.

Doin your exercises on a bass will make you a much stronger guitar player.

Also…I might add it does have the fret lines there :;):

I'm just gonna quote Phoo on this one.

I LOVE the sound of fretless.

Also - let me add - note how good fretless players use vibrato - it helps with intonation - don't just try to stick the note - move that neck wrist a bit - expression and also covers up the fact that you are not dead on.

I thought all bass were fret-less…

Seriously, what Tom said. Work that vibrato man… A well played fret-less sounds mighty, mighty fine. I don’t care for fret-less guitar though… not enough “zing”…

D

Here’s the trick - play with your eyes closed as much as possible. This is the advice I just got for learning the violin (found a cheap one in a junk shop, and finally gave in to the urge). Having to listen for the notes, rather than just looking down and seeing what fret we’re on, will have us both sounding great in no time! :) So far as your timing goes, get some recordings of songs you already know, and play along with them; it’s a great way to improve your timing. But watch out - some songs will make your timing worse ! Just try tapping your foot to ‘The Sounds of Silence’, by Simon and Garfunkel, some time! :disagree:

'til next time;

Learn to play with your feet … and use the force.

hhhmmmm I don't feel even the slightest under pressure now....

Fretless guitar - that really was not a good idea, was it?

who made it? Gelding?
