Dual boot

a cautionary tale

Like others, I run my DAW on a dual boot system (two computers in one).
It seamed like a good idea, at the time. The domestic partition became infected with ‘Pig Duck Fish PC Flu’. It slaughtered AVG and then promptly reduced XP to shreads Quicker Than I could Back Up My Tunes. It was then that I remembered that I’d punched a hole through the partition wall when I associated my General Music folder to My Music partition - oops?
So - it’s gone to meet it’s maker.
Everything I’ve done on n-Track, is on there, and I’m worried.

Hi TonyR:

Boy…
What a tough story…
It seems to me that everything/all is fine till you get some kind of infection/virus that the operating system(s) doesn’t like…
It appears that no one has found the real answer to this…
It don’t matter what protection-or-security application(s) you have bought or have installed…
No One appears to be immune to it…

I’ve had AVG McAfee Panda Norton and Nothing…
I still got IT…
Ronnie, the Keyboard Man, always tells me
to stay away from them PORN Sites when I tell him my computer picked something up…
:)
:p

He’s so smart…
He never tells me when he gets something…
computer virus ain’t funny…
:)
:p

It means, Starting all over again…
AND…

a Big Promise that IT wouldn’t happen, again…

Bill…

[edit] AaHh MaN… What a way to GO…

Have you tried this to get rid of your virus?:
http://us.norton.com/support/DIY/index.jsp

or this one?:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Their free.

Thanks Bill.
I once heard that running more than one anti virus prg might not be such a good idea - that they might fight with each other. Can anyone verify this?

Hi, Duffman.
In a word - no! When I realised that AVG was out of it’s depth, my computer guy said to try Avast but it was too late - hundreds of Trojans unloading themselves. By this time neither partition would boot.
I’ve taken the machine back to it’s maker but I’ll have to sweat it out untill Wednesday at the earliest. I gave my external drive to my daughter to take to uni and non of my n-T stuff is backed-up. Fingers crossed.

Hi TonyR:

I remember way back when…
RADAR Wayne was having issues with one of his machines…
He was almost ready to reformat the machine when we decided to uninstall his anti-virus applications he had running…
All of a sudden the machine burped and began working normal…
I think he had McAfee and Norton running at the same time…
One didn’t like the other application on the same operating system, what-so-ever…

Bill…

In limbo. Tomorrow, I’ll probably find out, weather or not I’ve lost everything.
Someone, shoot me, please!

“eggs in baskets”

I don’t ever remember losing any files…
when I picked up any viruses…
I know I had to reinstall the operating system…
I usually bought another drive, then copied any files off that drive after I installed all the applications that was installed and operating on the drive… Then I would format the drive and use it as a storage drive…
I do remember after having more than one computer, I would fire it up on another computer to retrieve files then format the drive…

I know it’s the worse thing I can remember doing/working around computers…
:disagree:
:)

Bill…

Cheers Bill. The thing that got me worried is when I tried to scramble an emergency back-up, I opened a music folder that contained only greyed-out art work - no wav - then - lights out!

Horrible, horrible…mean people are really mean.

yin and yang. Cops ‘n’ Robbers…

the geek shall inherit the earth.

Tony, I don’t know if you’ve already formatted your hard drive yet, if not WAIT.

LastXP Torrent If you know how to download torrents, this disk will help you tremendously. Put it in your computer, and boot it, and pick the Live Windows. This will boot your computer into a CD version of Windows XP, which will be unaffected by viruses. Using that, browse for your music folders and copy them to a backup, so that if you must reinstall windows, at least you’re not losing your music. In the future, I would get a separate drive on your computer, whether usb or internal, and keep your files you can’t afford to lose on that, so if you lose your operating system, you don’t lose your data. BTW, don’t use Norton or McAfee AV, they both lost their usefulness years ago. I get more computers infected with viruses with THOSE AV programs installed than all the others, put together.

Thanks, Danny. I’ll bare that in mind for future use.
I’ve given it to the guy who built it - it’s in his workshop being cloned. He’s a busy wizard and doesn’t like to be disturbed but said to give him a call ‘today’.
I’ve asked him to build me another machine for general use - I’ve lost the will to dual-boot.

Hi Tony:

I had a couple of machines in the old studio that had dual boot partitions..
It got so confusing trying to remember four operations that I just gave up on the idea..
It certainly takes away from the creative element when you have to think just "What Is It" your doing before you press the record button..

I tried it the other day..
I am unable to play my bass and chew gum at the same time, anymore..
???
:(

Bill..

It’s cold comfort Tony, but you’ll never have to deal with this again.
weve lost entire songs through sng files going corrupt, since then weve always made a backup copy of everything we do on an external drive before we finish each night. When we’re nearing completing a song we often make 2 backups, its so devastating you never ever let it happen again.
fingers crossed you get it all back

TinaM

Thanks Tina. Please don’t do the “I told you so” thing.
I have a history of being; ‘the one who backs-up and who laughs at those who don’t’.
When I said I’d given my external drive to my daughter to take to uni, what I meant to say, was; “I’m gonna twist her nose round really hard for robbing it from me”.
This is my first real loss - and the only one that really is a loss. Every five minutes, I’m remembering another solo project, or apology I’m gonna have to make to collaborators for losing the masters. n-T blues.
Sorry for the Me Me Me guys.

It’s really tough to loose audio files that can never be replaced… :)

Bill…

I had a call from the engineer today. He thinks he’s managed to rescue everything.
He said it was in a bad way.
Funny thing is, he’s having a run of machines coming into his shop with the same bugs and damage.

Mad computer disease…
Mouse-and-Keyboard disease…
It’s going around…
Hang on to your processor fan…
make it blow the other way…
:)
:p
That ain’t funny…
hehe…

It’s nice that he was able to retrieve your files, after all was said-and-done…
