FABULOUS NEW FEATURE

Build 2304

WELL FABULOUS TO ME because it was my idea - SPLICE TO GRID -

i saw this in SOUND ON SOUND, it was done by a top producer using Pto Tools (how it was done was not said) but i guessed at it, had a word with Flavio and he said yes, and its arrived -

what does it do - well it splice,s (CUTS) a track into pieces directly under the divisions on the grid - this makes it exceedingly easy to re-arange parts of a loop or track to suit your ideas -

how it works - first click on the GRID icon on toolbar -

insert track/loop that you want to slice up - go to EDIT/GRID - make sure SNAP TO GRID IS ON - then select GRID PROPERTIES - set grid to size required - then back to EDIT and make sure SNAP TO 0 is checked -

now highlight the area of the track that you want to slice - back to EDIT/NON DESTRUCTIVE/splice to grid - with the track still selected it looks like nothing has hapened - de-select track and you will see the cuts that have been made - move about at will -

Dr J

Hi Doc J:

This sounds like a Leading Edge Feature…

I take it…
as long as there is a “GRID” it doesn’t matter if it’s a MIDI file on the Time line or an Analogue file… ??

That being said,
Can any number of grids be moved?

Having said that…
Can any combinations of grids be moved…
???

e.g.

Lets say…
Grids 1 to 16

and … I don’t know if you’d want to do this…
BUT…
Lets say…
I want to move just the “ODD” numbers…
Can that be done??

and

Lets say…
Grids
1 - 3

8

and

12

I want to copy-and-paste those to a new timeline…
Am I
thinking about this in the right context ????

Bill…

SPLICE TO GRID is only for AUDIO TRACKS -

after a track has been cut into say, MEASURES then you can select how many parts to move by holding down the SHIFT KEY and selecting with the mouse -

you can copy and paste any selected slices(s)-

it works great on GUITAR tracks - you can slice up a section of track and re=arange it to make it completely different - same with drume or anything -

it should be possible to chop out BAD NOTES/DRUM HITS and easily replace them with GOOD parts from another part of the track or from another track -

you can re-slice a slice. say you have sliced a track to MEASURES. you can then select a measure, resize the grid and re-slice (you can go down to 1/128 of a measure, thats a lot of slices) -

by copying and pasting you can take pieces from a track, paste to a new one and add effects to those slices so the effects are on the pasted slices only

Dr J

Cool. This has sorely been missing from n-Track. This type of editing is sooo easy in my “other” software (that I won’t name, but you know what it is… :) ) “Ripple editing” Sooo cool…

Nice add Flavio!

D

here is an article that explains more on how SPLICE TO GRID is used to add that cutting edge to your work -

http://remixmag.com/tech_features/remix_fractal_tendencies/

OK, so although i made the suggestion to add “splice to grid to N”, i dont want to over egg the point - but the addition of this feature puts N right up there with the BIG BOYS in the DAW world - and of course MANY, MANY THANKS to Flavio for the implementation -

Dr J

Hi Dr J and Guys:

Thanks for the Layman’s description of this…
I have it downloaded…
I’ll install it sometime today… This will work for me with hi-hat and snare tracks…

Bill…

[EDIT]
That’s where using more than one editor has it’s uses… You’re able to see what features they have…

Heh, I’ve been doing that manually since n-Track 2.x. It’ll save some time.

Now this is something that may make me consider upgrading - essentially it makes n-Track into a potential Celemony Melodyne - a great idea!

Congrats Dr. J - Fabulous indeed.

Hi Doc J:

I got it at this attempt…

So, build 2305 does not open?
or is Corrupt?

Bill

Can you explain in more detail how this would make n-Track like Melodyne?

Paul

Bill (woxnerw)

— Build 2305 - track faders go to -399.9 below 0db —
do you think you will be able to replace your snare hits with this ? should now be very easy to do -

Paul -

you slice up a vocal track, say into measures, and apply a different pitch (time streatch) to each slice - at least thats the theory - will try it out later -

Dr J

Seriously man, just sing the part again.

Most hosts built-in pitch algo’s sound cheesy to me. Certainly nowhere near the Melodyne caliber stuff. However, n doesn’t cost what Melodyne does either!

D

Captain D -

YES - if you are in a live recording situation (even then there should be an AUTOTUNE in the rack)-

NO - if you are re-mixing or producing HIP HOP (where practically every word is now pitch shifted) here Melodyne is the app to use - however if i remenber correctly on your BLOGSITE you said that N had the best pitch shifting you had ever heard - as said “OK ITS NOT MELODYNE” but N can create some very interesting effects, even without the fancy MELODYNE GUI to guide you once you get the knack its very quick to pitch shift with N -

Paul

Not that I've ever worked with Celemony but my limited understanding is that it allows you to break an audio file into small - almost component - parts that you can then modify (stretch, shrink, pitch shift, add effects, etc) then re-combine as you see fit.

Seems to me that Dr. J's feature will allow us to fairly easily do the same in n.

all you have to do to try it is insert a vocal track, click on GRID icon, highlight area of track - then EDIT/non destructive/splice to grid - the track will now be cut under the grid in highlighted area -

double click on first cut section to open track prefs - change TRANSPOSE to +4, click on next section and change transpose to -4 so on so forth (+4 / -4) - then hit play and hear the pitch change as track plays -

to make it work correctly, you have to zoom in on the START area of the track you want to treat and highlight a very thin section between vocals (then EDIT/non destructive/splice at start of section, do same for end position of section - you now have a cut section , do same as above (click on section, transpose etc) - pitch will shift and everything will still be in sync -

Dr J

Just tried it with Phoo’s “noodle.wma” file.
Instant heart attack!! Very cool. Very easy.
Thanks DR and Flavio
:D

BTW - did anyone hear that the Spice Girls were
going to use live ‘pitch correction’ during there
next outing. Evidently they have a habbit of going
off key.

Hi Doc J:

I just had a look at that piece of Hardware…
:)
:O
I’m shaking my head over it…
I think that any hard working studio should have maybe, two of those units connected to the Patch Bay…

I looked for the price of it…
However, I couldn’t seem to find it anywhere on the page…
But…
You know, if you gotta ask what the price of it is you can’t afford it…
:p

If I was tracking like I used to, and I didn’t have a couple of them
???

Bill…

[EDIT]

I downloaded build 2305 last evening…
I don’t have it installed yet…
Maybe sometime today…
Today is a rainday…
I gotta find something “Inside”…
to do…
