buffer settings
it seems that while i have been away droves of people have left N because of the time it takes to start playback (anything between 2 days and 30 seconds before pkayback starts) - all seem to have tried everything and nothing works - well whats the problem - NOT ENOUGH RAM - using normal buffering N will use something like 175+ meg of ram, the slow playback happens when ram gets to such a low level that PAGE SWOP starts to take place (windows creates virtual memory on hard drive USUALLY the same drive as you are trying to stream from) SO NOTHING HAPPENS TILL WINDOWS HAS SET UP PAGE SWOP -
there is however a cure for this -
1…open buffer settings - more options -
2…turn lefthand wheel (recording)fully to the left -
3…set righthand wheel (playback)to the centre (should say 1500 samples)
4… change the value in the botton two righthand box.s (preload and disk load) to 2 - apply -
this will give prety much instant playback - (well on my sytem it does) -
ONLY ONE PROBLEM do not do the above while audio is playing as N will freeze up your computer -

Thanx Wabbitt - good to see you back and helping out.
droves of people have left N

Levi - they have - very talented folks have left, it’s a fact - the world is round.
NEXT!
Well… despite my better judgement… I gotta chime in here…
First, HI WABBIT! Good to see you around again, although I won’t be around much…
One poster who has experienced this problem in a BAD way stated he is working with straight audio, no MIDI/Samples and has a pretty powerful, modern PC with one gigabyte of RAM. He has the problem with ASIO or WDM drivers. So, how much memory does n need to buffer properly? Too much if that is indeed the problem. I still say it’s because n’s audio engine is fundamentally flawed somehow. I have never seen this occur with other audio software. Never.
I don’t have the programming expertise or access to any code to tell what the problem might be but I believe in calling it what it is… broken.
The dev needs to fix it badly. Of the people I have sent here, all of them had so much trouble getting tracks to synch up, sluggish performance etc… All the stuff newbs come in and ask about on the forum. They didn’t want to play software detectives, so I pointed them to another app that works “out of the box”. Bingo. Happy campers… missed opportunities for FaSoft.

Apparently not... Magic Rabbit just outlined how that is not always the case. Magic Rabbit, I would encourage you to please submit a trouble report and please follow up here to let us know the progress.

Additionally, this should not be the case. There should be error handling to deal with such things. Also submit a report on this and please let us know your status.
Great idea BubbaG - More reports less retorts.
That was a retort - sorry.
Do bug reports actually get anything done?
It seems Flavio fixes things in new builds that are more obscure to me and not really complained about here in the forum. Change Log.

I'm working wav, using ntrack generic settings (i haven't touch the buffering any) and experience no hang'ups. Just great quick and smooth operation.
But I like MJ's helpful ideas. Just haven't seen droves leave. what is a drove?
50/100?
Websters: 2. Usually, droves. a large crowd of human beings, esp. in motion: They came to Yankee Stadium in droves.
60,000 70,000? uh huh.

50/100
Oh no! It's worse than I thought! It's Giga-Droves!

PS Why did you quote ME when nothing in the rest of your post referred to the quote? You enjoy pickin' a fight or something?

Some debating is good.
Thx for not freakin out! I quoted you because of the description of your friends problems. Sounds a lot like my setup but I'm having very smooth operation with n.
Just adding a pro.

No worries Levi… it’s all good bro’…
It’s regrettable for sure that my bud’s didn’t get on with n-Track but I couldn’t really blame them when all they wanted to do was plug in and make some racket. Shoot… it’s why I bailed! They found a solution and that’s what really matters I guess…

We should be making music not getting frustrated.
After a long spell of not being emotionally able to do anything with my music - I started a new tune in n-Track today - took the whole day off with visions of my beautiful, powerfully written lyrics coming to fruition with some wonderful instrumentation. Had it all inside me waiting to be 'born.' I layed out the high hat count in EZdrummer and dropped it into n. Then it hit me - I can't lay in the intro bars of drums, because it demands too much and sucks the life out of the creative process editing midi tracks instead of dropping them in place in the same track. I don't know what I was thinking - I knew that about n - it was still a 'moment' though I will never forget.

Man... I'm sorry Poppa... been there... done that. Maybe someday n will have the "umphenagle" to get it done...
