Folk Roots

I’ve now finished the tour, and being knocked up has given me the oppertunity to put my feet up for a bit…

so Rob and I have found a folk club to play in every month, just to keep the music alive and for me, it is a chance to play with others, learn some covers and rediscover m folk roots. It’s really nice, coz it’s a chance to get Rob playing too and for us to just ‘jam’ together.

Anyhow, i’ve been looking for traditional folk songs to learn, and was wondering if you guys had any suggestions???

:D

When you get out there…
for a few weeks, let your audience dictate your play list… When you include them…
that way, they’ll feel like they are part of your development…

Audience/Stage…
give-and-take…

:)

One-on-one, when used right, sometimes works quite well…

How does your folk set list read so far?

How does your folk set list read so far?

'She moved through the fair'
'Farewell Farewell' (Willy 'O Winsbury)
'The trees they do grow high'
'The old man' and 'the cobblers daughter' (Kater rusby)

How many songs do you need to fill out a “Set” ????

Bill..

no specific amount, it's really very informal, but great fun...there are about 6 or 8 of us, sat in a pub, totally acoustic, just jamming, joining in with each other, mandolins etc etc.

I just realised that my music is not that close to traditional folk any more so I want to learn some more 'fitting' songs.

There's no audience, we just play to and with eachother...music, for the love of it :)

AaHh> We call that a Kitchen Party… Boiled Dinner and Apple Pie… Fiddles, Mandolins and Acoustic Guitars… Maybe, a Banjo… Bluegrass… Starts at noontime and ends up when the booze is all gone… :) :p

Bill…

We call it a hootenanny!

I did get into folk music for a little while in my teens & stil adore the sandy denny fareport albums & basket of lihgt by pentangle
so what about
once i had a sweetheart by pentangle

john riley by the byrds

& reynardine by fareport
songs that still make me go all goosebumpy!

I think you should do whole sets of songs by Donovan, actually. does that count as folk?

You know which contemporary folk artist I really think is just the greatest? Dar Williams. What a great songwriter.

Here’s a cover that works pretty good … At least this time of year…

White Christmas

The only thing is, it’s done pretty well… It’s not missing anything… I can tell you that… :)

I thought of UJ when I opened it up… Sorry… I had to post the link…

Bill…

How about “Eddystone Light” or some of those old sea shanties?
