...I think your vocals are much better than Mark's.

Bubba - you are too kind. I've grown fond of Mark's vocals and it really think they fit his songs, so I'm at least glad, you don't think I've botched his vocals.

I FTP'ed all the files that you should need - see my message. Let me know if you have any problems with the project. This should be fun to see what you can do with the recording!

Nice Mike!

I like it as is but I can’t wait to hear what Sir Bubba of Gump can do with it. (He’s a sorcerer ya’ know…)

:agree:

PS That new mic sounds sweet as well… :)

Here is a very, very quick and dirty mix I did on my crud ball little head phones at work. I am sure there is plenty wrong with it. BUT, it should illustrate the reverb deal I was talking about. While the guitar is panned right, you can still hear it in the room on the left side. I will mess with this more tonight when I have real speakers to work with. Though, I wish I had the original MIDI for the drums rather than a 2 track mix. You can only do so much with a multiband comp to get things to pop on a 2 track mix.

And yes, that AT4050 is indeed a great mic. Told ya. :D

I should also mention I only used plugs that either come from Reaper or you can get as an uncrippled demo from Stillwell if for whatever reason you want to mess with the Reaper file.

Sounds pretty good!
See even you left out the penny whistle :-) It sounds like you did something interesting with the harmony track also.

Right but I think I was doing the reverb exactly the way you suggested?
It sounds like you've used a lot more reverb than I have.

The drum track is created from ACID loops with real drums, not MIDI.
In my mix, I used compression on the drum track, to get it to pop.

I also brightened up a bunch of the tracks: vocals, acoustic & mandolin.

Actually, I totally missed the penny whistle track. When I am not stuffing my face and answering phones and 10 other things I will give it some love tonight. Whistle is there now.

As for how you had the reverb set up… let me check your original file and let you know.

Hrm, yup. You have it set correctly. I am not sure what the deal is. Maybe it is just how PSP sounds… and perhaps if you were using a spring or plate model they make it mono like the original units? No idea. Of course, I could be nuts too.

Your quick mix sounded more like my original mix, in terms of the acoustic guitar.
The EasyVerb is a great plug-in and it could very well be how I have it set, although I thought you had quite a bit of reverb as I mentioned.
I’d love to see your final RPP file if you could send it to me.

Originally, I thought you were suggested panning just the reverb.
Is that correct?

I just listened to your mix on my home studio headphones and I’d like to hear a higher res MP3 file because the vocals & guitar sounded a little harsh to my ears (and compared to my original mix).

I can’t wait till the final.
Thanks again.

PS - I’ve got a new mix on my web site. I’ve cleaned up the penny whistle solo and added a little section at the end of the song. I’ve attempted to encorporate some of Bubba’s suggestions. See what you think.

I listened at home and what I posted earlier is junk. Too much reverb, bass is a mess… the result of $3 headphones at work. Ah well… gimmie a few days.

No problem - please do this at your convenience.

Here, this should be pretty right on.

I did a light mastering pass on it so it is loud… but not too terribly loud. Quite dynamic really. i also kept the bass a little more chill than I normally would in a typical pop mix as this is much more folk where I want to feel the bass more than hear it.

Darn, I can’t hear a thing today, sinus’s have my ears ringing and everything else is background muddle. Pickin sounded great though from what I could hear! :agree:

Me likey... VERY nice.

Good job you guys! :agree: :agree:

I want to thank Bubba for his interest in the song.
His mixing techniques definitely were enlightening to me.
Thanks Bubba!

BTW - the next song in my Fav project will probably be Neil Young’s “Like An Inca”. It’s a song that got passed over but it’s a great groove tune. If anyone knows the song & is interested in colloborating, please let me know.

Yes, really nice sound you two created.
And the tone from your mics on the opening
acoustic are stunning.

What specifically did you take away? I just mix stuff and likely take a lot for granted... so I don't know what of value may be in there. Plus, other folks might like to know.

Well you clearly pointed out that I had the stereo image incorrect, i.e., right side was too hot. But in general, your mix just re-affirmed things that I was doing or attempting to do in my mix. I haven't had time yet to analysis your project file, but I am going to, and I am sure that I will learn more once I do that.

Hey folks - I finally added a video to the Mark Knopfler song - you can watch it here Golden Heart.

I hope that you like the hat!

Also, you can download the MP3 audio for free at my web site.

Hi Mr Soul:

I didn’t hear any links to your song back in October…
If I did I have forgotten what it was like, then…
This is sounding pretty nice on the Youtube link compressed sample (that Youtube does to the audio and all)…
Does this version contain the Mastering that Bubbagump added to the track ?

Yep…
Neil was over here last fall…
Every time he comes over this way he sells out…
He’s a popular boy around these parts…

Bill…
