BTW, I know a number of n-Trackers who went to Reaper due to dropouts. I’d be very interested to learn of people who changed from Reaper to n-Track for the same reason. Quite possible that it’s a wash, but based on what I’ve seen on various forums, it’s not.
That’s a good point jeff. I’d also like to know how many satisfied n-trackers there are out there. I’m sure there’s many - it’s just the few with problems that come here that we hear about and that skews the stats.
I did switch because of poor audio performance but then I found all the wonderful tools R has that n-Track doesn’t. Many of these I put in the “V6 Feature request” thread. Let’s see what surprises we get hah?
BTW, that’s not a dig at n-Track… just an observation.

I still am using NT 4 (2099) with 2 Aud SB AMD64X2 6000 Duel core and I have no troubles with mine.
Hey guys, I’m just chiming in to commiserate… the first real original, decent work I really did was on n-Track. My first success! I wish it had continued to work, and not gone through so many unsuccessful changes! I’m on to something else now too. I found a copy of Sam 9 SE in that Computer Music magazine over Christmas, which I’m liking using. Working fine.
I’ll also check in when n- gets to 6. If it does! Anyway I hear it about the soft-spot- me too.
EDIT: Once again I posted without realizing I was at page one of a three page discussion! Whee! I’m back!
Hi Sloom:
It’s good to see you posting here, again…
It don’t matter what hardware and software we use…
This Board is just nice to visit to see what’s going on, with those who post…
I don’t use much stuff outside of n-Track…
A few pieces…
Well for me…
Bill…
Hey, Sloom, enter the contest!
Hey Bill, how are ye? Tom, what contest?
Hi Sloom,
Long time no see eh?
Recording contest… Click the ANNOUNCEMENT link HERE
D
Hey D, good to be talkin’ to you folks again. Yep, I found it, and went to the Soundclick link. I just logged in, and left… Did I miss anything?.. The “Duh” in the announcements was for me, by the way!
This is great- something to focus on, as I’m no longer in a band, per se. I’m pretty psyched up for this- should be a good event, lots of good music to come of it I’m sure.
Fun timing to walk back in! And what a good idea.
Hi Sloom:
What’s going on …
Computer-wise with you-and-your setup?
Post your stuff on the wiki link that discusses config’s and computers hardware that work with n-Track…
There’s a link to that wiki page on a thread somewhere around the Board…
In fact all of us who visits the Board should find some time to post their computer’s specs. and read what the others post to get some idea just where their machines Work-or-Fail…
using n-Track…
It’s just an idea I have…
Of Course…
Bill…
You’re the idea guy Bill. I will go post on that link.
Far as gadgetry, I had the Tascam 788 for a while, and then unloaded it. It did a real nice job of recording, but it was more process than I wanted to do to export tracks to the PC- and it lacked phantom-power, which meant needing a supply when using a condenser mic. So it’s gone, and I just have the PC now. The 788 still is, despite my griping, a good little gadget, but I didn’t use it enough to miss it.
I’m now hovering over a return to tape of some kind for my own musical endeavors, but I’ve been using Samplitude SE since Christmas. I haven’t done much with it, just some songwriting sessions for my little Grunky-Rock project, but I think it sounds really good. I was doing a few projects in Sonar HS4, and then heard the same files in Samplitude and moved right over.
My PC is pretty “light”; 1.8 GHz, 1GB RAM (soon, actually. A friend of mine has it, and just needs to show up with it!). Simple, probably relatively noisy! but I’m relatively noisy on a good day as well. Nothing special really, the thing works, so I’m pretty set. I am a bit curious to see if n- will ever be compatible again in my life, but honestly I’m getting into Sam SE, and finding it’s pretty good. I don’t, however, think I’ll be upgrading anytime soon. Samplitude is an expensive app! Now, n-Track is not…
I still have my M-30 mixer, and a little Studiomaster mixer for phantom-power… a dirty little basement studio and rehearsal space. I recently got my bass amp kicked up with a Sunn 300T head and re-vamped an old Peavey 215 cab (RBS-1 sub-woofer, now a front-firing tank-thumper), and it’s huge and punchy. Life is good.
It’s good to see most of the old crew still hangin’! Cool.
Howdy, sorry to hear about your issues.
I’m still using n without any problems. Version 5 in fact. With windows vista, on a smaller acer laptop. N works as great as ever.
I downloaded a sample of reaper a few months ago and didn’t care for it. N track is where it’s at.

I somewhat agree - everything "should" work on a PC, but unfortuantely, that simply is not the case.
I agree to a point... but the big R universally works well, if not exceptionally, on dern near everything. So this is 100% a code thing. I don't buy any of this hardware voodoo as the common denominator here is N . Other DAWs are running perfectly well regardless of hardware config. Sorry, but after hanging around here for 8 or 9 years now... I am in Diogenes' court... v6 had better be absolutely incredible for me to ever consider N again as the R camp is a cheaper, faster, significantly more feature rich, and more reliable platform all around.
Hi Bubba,
Did you read about that guy that has R running on one of those ASUS “Eee” Pocket Computers? Pretty doggone sweet! USB interface and a big honkin’ memory card and you can tote around your DAW in your pants pocket with full recording/editing/mixing facilities.
It’s a great time to be a recording musician… (Hmmm… I sound like an echo…)
D
Case in point… this is a code thing… not a hardware thing. R can run on any old piece of crap all the way up to super multicore machines… N’s problems have nothing to do with hardware and “a dizzing array of possible hardware configurations.”
Bubbagump - your opinion. so, use R already.
He does - and well I might add. No problem here.
No problem here.
Nor here. (Obviously...

No need for a fuss. Bubba was a looonnggg time n user from way back there as was Teej and Mac and... Did they switch because they didn't like the color scheme of the web forum? No... they switched because they needed something that works all the time every time. Something where one can concentrate on the music rather than debugging or "work-arounding". Some wound up using MTS, Energy XT, Podium, Reaper etc or moving to commercial offerings like Sonar, Cubase, ProTools etc... No big deal. This kind of thing happens in the life cycle of a product.
However my "opinion" backed by lots and lots of research and testing on a bunch of different PC's bear out Bubba's observations to be more "fact" than opinion. Again, no big deal. If n works well for you in its current state, wonderful! If it's all you need, great! As for the rest of us, we'd like to see V6 return n-Track to its V3.3 "Glory Days". Flavio is up to the task I believe.

Flavio is up to the task I believe.
He better be or I will never eat Italian food again, ever.
