Issue Importing

MIDI Session into b2621

Hi Flavio:

I am a seldom MIDI user…
However, the other day I had this MIDI Session sent to me as an attachment in some E-Mail…
Till I got it imported and up-and-running I had n-Track crash (blue screen) several times…
It would play in Windows Media Player and all…
BUT I had no luck with it running with-in b2621…
Then you posted b2624 and usually I install the latest build on this utility machine…
It opened and displayed the tracks just fine… I have no idea why this issue behaved as it did… However, all is fine with this issue in b2621…

OoHh…
It sent off a .dmp File on each crash…
I just don’t know what may have caused the issue…
My machines may have been acting “Snotty” …
Who knows.

???

I find I am unable to get the file (session) to play (Audio) on the DJ Studio Intel/XP (P-4) Studio machine with Windows Media Player or n-Track… It opens… It just don’t play any Audio…
:(
????

I thought I would post this comment in case any of the MIDI users had any comments on why this issue may have happened…

Bill.

Back Again Gents:

There are 14 MIDI Tracks to this session…
I am able to play-and-hear them from the timeline… I attempted to mixdown the tracks at one time to a Left-and-right .wav file so I can reproduce them on an n-track timeline…
The mixed down file amounts to a .wav file of some 33 megs…
I imported the two wav files into n-Track BUT…
there is no audio coming from them, and the .npk files have no amplitude… n-Track guided me through the wizzard process of re-recording-and-converting the MIDI files to .wav files…
I tried to play the wav files in Windows Media Player an GoldWave…
Same Thing…
Am I missing something ????

Bill…

edit…
OoHh yes…
While playing the MIDI files in n=-Track I am able to mix the levels from the Timeline Mixer…
BUT…
there is no meter movement on the VU Meters…
anywhere…
Does that have any significant meaning ?

Hi Bill. Did you assign instruments to the midi tracks?

Hi Bill. Did you assign instruments to the midi tracks?

Hi TonyR:

Thanks for the reply..
I assumed that the tracks had instruments already assigned to them..
Interesting..
Could that be why there is no VU Meter movement on the track meter/strip mixers?
If I move the faders I am able to change the mix of whatever I am hearing, in the tracks as they are now..
Well.. ????..

This might or could be a classic example of attending "MIDI 101", for me.
:)

I have this idea..

Without imposing on anyone or infringing on the owner of this file, could I upload this file and post a link to this classic and continue discussing this file to gain MIDI knowledge-and-navigation with it's use ?

Could this idea have any merit for me..

OR..
the Board Members, as a group??

As you can see, I'm looking for some positive support regarding MIDI Navigation.. The file is just over 84 kbs. It's not excessively large.. I don't think.. or..
is it ????

Bill..

I’m up for any thing to help learn how best to use midi in n-track.
Like you I’m still just getting going with midi.
I have had a number of crashes related to imported and newly created midi tracks myself.
Would need to see this midi session attachment you referenced in your first post, not sure if I understand what that is.
Usually, as TonyR pointed out, you import a midi track, and then use the track properties screen to assign an instrument to actually get sound.

Hi TonyR and pingcat:

I opened the session in n-Track again and went to preferences>Midi and played with the General Midi instruments by assigning various voices to the tracks…
Still no VU Meter movement to any of the mixer strips…
It seems to be a pretty standard set of Midi tracks…
However, some of them are “Collapsed”… meaning…
The track is there BUT…
Closed…
That’s the best I can describe the closed ones…
I don’t know how to open the closed tracks…
and if it’s necessary…

If your server will accept E-Mail with music/Midi file attachments Send me a PM and I’ll send you the file (as an attachment) to see if the session response is the same as it is over here…
It might be interesting to see how we manage the session and progress (with a Midi File) at the same time…

It might be interesting…

Bill

So! We need a list of what instruments the midi tracks might be for:- Trk 1 Drums, Trk 2 Bass and so on. Unless it’s some whako Jazz classic the drums are easiest to spot in the piano roll and timeline with their regular patterns. First, I would open n-Track Drums (Quick-Start guide in tips and tricks) with each track untill it makes sense. No worries with midi file sizes, they’re tiny.

Back Again:

I was looking for some mail from pingcat for an E-Mail address…
Maybe, he’s busy or not around his computer…
I have the file opened on the timeline…
looking for the instruments that are defaulted to the song…
Maybe again… In the meantime I’ll do a Print Screen and post what I see on the setup I have the file opened with…
On the latest build 2624, all the tracks are the same colour… On the earlier build 2621, all the tracks showed up in different colours… I checked the box, in the preferences and attempted to set each track in a different colour…
NO-GO…
Anyway, send me an address and I’ll send you the session…
If you’re interested…
While I set up a folder to post Print screens…
and whatever…

Bill…

Here’s a link to the printscreen that just got posted…
PrintScreen
I’m checking to see if it works…
Well…

I need to create a folder to put all this stuff into and keep the site clean-and-all…

Bill…

edit… It appears to be working…

Hello Bill,
sorry I’ve been away from my computer all afternoon, and now have to get someone to the ER, its going to be a long night.

Will try to catch up with this topic sometime tomorrow afternoon.

I have a folder up-and-running for this project… I have the midi file posted there as well and some n-Track backup .sng files there as well…
I think this link should take you there…

Link to Midi Project

Checking to see if it works…
It appears to be O.K.
:agree:

Bill

edit… If anyone knows how to move this topic out of this area… Go For IT… Put it in anything else topic…

:) :)

Hi pingcat:

I hope that all-is-well with you…
Take care and be careful…
See yea…

Bill…

I’m back, all is well here for now.

I was able to download the john song and import into n-track.
My midi understanding is small at this point, but I can get it to
play thru Microsoft GS wavetable synth.
Some odd things I see. . .

-Tracks 2+5 seem some what corrupted.
There is extra space off to the right but no midi data.
And if I try to shorten it, it gets very strange by duplicating the track out to the right. And there were several blank tracks.

-During playback all the channels but 5, 10, and 11 show track meter activity, yet all tracks can be heard.

I was able to send the drum track to n-track drums.

Anything that says emergency leaves the door swinging…
Don’t throw anything away…

I thought at one time I had one of those closed timeline tracks expanded and there appeared to be some data on it…
I guess I may have had another track opened and looking at it by mistake…

It looks like it’s a perfect set of tracks to be able to learn how to edit, substitute tracks, add tracks, delete tracks and generally play around with MIDI navigation, and all…

My setup doesn’t show any VU Meter movement on any track…
I am able to change track colours BUT I find I am unable to Save AS…
when closing the session…
Could it be something in the way my setup is configured ??
Also, I find that some of the tracks have notes that continue to play after the end of the song…

I would be interested in editing those tracks so the notes stop playing, or find out how to edit them when they are converted to a .wav file…

I will post the files that I converted the other day…
The .wav files play but they appear to have nothing on them…

I believe you are making much more headway playing with this session than I am…

I guess I have a thicker head…
:p

What’s this MIDI…
AnyWay ????
Sorry, all you midi freaks…

I would be interested in converting the Drum track to represent a more life-like sounding Tub Track(s)…
As well, the Bass track could use a more life-like human sounding track…
Just for the idea of improving midi navigation…
I would describe that area as the creative aspect of music…
Anyway, I hope to learn how to deal with and improve my MIDI knowledge…
soon-than-later…
:)
:agree:

Bill…

e.g.
If you have the permissions to post into that folder
Please…
by-all-means…
If not and you’d like to post something to show your Midi understand and all, maybe you can open and post printscreens and files regarding this TO-DO…

Thank you gents…

Hi, guys. Trying to find an hour to concentrate on this - meanwhile, it’s best not to try to edit midi in the timeline.

Hi Bill. If a midi note over-runs a section of track, either at the end, or as a result of being stopped or rewound, the note will ‘hang’. You turn this off in the midi prefs.

Hi TonyR:

Thanks for the reply…
I’m working away here today in the Studio…

I sounds like pingcat’s attention got diverted yesterday…
I hope all is well, with him…

The files that got posted last evening came from the Intel Dual Processor E-5200 Vista Machine in the house…
I will open this slow P-4 machine on the DJ Desk to see if the file behaves closely to the E-5200 Vista Machine…
I hope… and…
We’ll see…

This is a break in the Midi Concentration effort…

We are in for a Big Blow sometime over the weekend…
The Storm Track puts us, over here somewhere on the east side of the weather…
Hurricane Earl, as it’s been called, looks like it’s headed into the Bay of Fundy…The weather here has been Record Warm all week…
Not good for the effects of a Big Blow…
We are all bracing for the weekend…

Anyway I have recorded the initial track here in the Studio…
I couldn’t wait any longer…
I need a break from all this wiring and all…
I opened a folder on the 4Shared Storage Site and uploaded some files to it…
Here’s a Link to the Studio Folder
(Checking, to see if it works)
It seems to work…
However, I’m not-so-sure it’s secure… Can you check to see how secure it is, for me????

[EDIT]
The Print screen you see there is the timeline of the “Ghost Track” plus the first Studio track (nothing Special, mind you) No practice… I’m just played outta chops… hence 07 edits to get it to play to the Ghost Track … I haven’t played for a couple of years… It’s so bad, you guys…Shame-on-Me…

Tomorrow, I’m back to work…
sigh…
This is really gonna hurt things that I’d prefer to be doing…
I promised myself that I wouldn’t be returning to work, in the fall…
AND…
Here-I-Am…
???
:disagree:
MmAaNn…

Bill…

What d’you reckon?
Track 1 Piano
2 Bass
3 -
4 Piano
5 Piano
6 -
7 -
8 -
9 Drums
10 Piano
11 Piano
12 Piano

The space off to the right, is just space/overrun.

TonyR,
I think if you look at properties for each track you will see the instrument name that was intended for each.
I think there were three crunch/overdrive guitar parts (I am at work, will not be at my n-track machine until tonight).

Bill,
The ER visit went quickly and all is well, I have a family member with a life time illness that comes and goes, and right now it is back.
