Just Starting..Huge Issues

Note on keyboard takes 2 seconds to show

Hi all.

Just starting here, (very, very newbie) and I can’t find anything on this by searching.

I’m using the latest nTrack on Vista.

When I try to record keyboard, I press a note and it takes a full two seconds for the sound to come through.

I’ve tried changing the drivers to WaveRT but that tells me ‘rear input’, and I’ve only a parrallel port and a USB at the back of my laptop.

Help in plain English would be much appreciated!!!
Craig

What soundcard are you using? have you messed with buffering settings?

Just using the laptops mic and headphone…16 bit stereo…(I did say I was just starting :slight_smile:
)
Haven’t touched the buffering settings.

Is it a USB midi keyboard? What you are probably experiencing is the main problem with DAW midi - it’s called “latency” - and results from the need for the computer to process the input, generate the sound, and spit it back out. The actual amount of lag depends in part on the buffering settings. With a good soundcard and the proper settings, latency can be pretty low, down to 2ms or so. Compare this with 10ms for a vintage Minimoog. Others here know more about the technical stuff that I do. For my laptop a few years ago I got the Echo Indigo and a USB keyboard controller - the Indigo does 24/96 using ASIO drivers, and is entirely playable in real time. I suspect you won’t get great latency from the onboard soundcard of your laptop, but then again I’m not a tech head.

Thanks Tom. Completely right about the latency, as I’ve now discovered a thread on the subject!!

It’s because I was trying to play the keyboard and monitor it through the soundcard. I need to monitor it before it hits the laptop either by miking the keyboard or using an external mixer’s headphones.

Cheers
