M-Audio Powered Monitors

Anyone using them?

Amazon.com is advertising two different sets of M-Audio powered studio monitor speakers for under $100 US.

M-Audio Studiophile DX4 Professional Desktop Monitoring System, Black

Is anyone out there using these – are they even worth considering?

I’m currently using my Logitech 5.1 surround speakers – they’re great for games or movies, but problematic for mixing (the sound is not bad at all, but the subwoofer and 5.1 setup complicates matters when mixing).

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I’m using the DX8 model and am totally sold on them. One of the guys at work has DX4 but they are in serious need of the subwoofer, thought they still sound good, what little I’ve hear on them, that is.

There was a good discussion about using sub woofers when mixing/mastering either here or on Audiominds. Personally, I’m scared to death of 'em! :D Seriously, throwing a sub into an already complicated task sounds like trouble to me. I have Event TR8’s with an 8 inch woofer. All the bass I want or need IMO**. I guess when space is an issue, the little 4 or 5 inchers are OK with a sub… but be CAREFUL! I used to try mixing with a set of Logitech speakers with a sub. Very difficult to get the bass right. At least it is for me.

PS ** Of course, I don’t do REAL bass heavy stuff like hip-hop or techno etc…
