midi synch - starts but no stop

I’m a new user and have been using nTrack since Friday evening with midi files as a background to record my guitar.
I just registered the n-Track studio because it has worked so much better than the other midi/audio recording software I had been using.

I use a Roland RC-50 as a midi synch master. When I start with that device, n_Track (having been put into the record mode and ‘waiting for midi synch’) starts (I can hear the intro count-n bars and the midi tracks start up just fine). So I have teh bass and drums etc. that I want and I record my guitar track into an nTrack audio track.

Everything is working fine at this point. When I stop with the RC-50, nTrack continues - does not stop. The only way I can stop it is to hit the stop button (I’m usually across the room).

The funny thing is, this used to work (even this morning before I registerd my copy). I’ve been over the MIDI device settings and the sync dialog a few times and verified that I have everything set up the way it should be.

Thanks for any help,

Rich

I haven’t done this in many years, but back when I was trying I found that that some things like this just didn’t work as expected. At the time the issue was that n-Tracks wasn’t responding to MIDI machine commands as expected. In short, bugs in n-Tracks. I was trying to sync n-Tracks to tape. MIDI Song Position wasn’t working either. That was long ago.

That said, since it did work at some point for you maybe the bugs of the past are indeed bugs of the past.

One thing I ran into that bugged me was that the button that enabled MIDI sync looked more highlighted when it was disabled that when it was enabled. I kept setting it backwards and then things didn’t work. Since it starts I doubt that’s it. This happened because the common dialogs in WinXp had a different look than previous operating systems. It wasn’t a bug in n-Tracks. Replacing the sync on/off “button” with a “check” would avoid the issue though.

I don’t know if this would matter when doing sync, but check to see if “stop playback at the end of the song” is disabled (whatever it’s called). When it’s enabled song playback stops automatically after the longest wave ends. When enabled you have to stop it manually every time. I suspect this is the issue.

Thanks for your advice. The ‘stop playback…’ option doesn’t do it either.

It’s pretty disappointing because it is very convenient to be sitting there with the guitar and be able to start/stop the midi with my footswitch. It really sucks to have that for a couple of hours and then lose it :)

I’ll keep playing around with it.

Hi richyankee:

I’m no MIDI user of n-Track…
But I will suggest maybe, going to the “REVERT to the DEFAULT” Settings…
You’ll find it on the opening page of the Settings/Preferences"…

Way back when I’d send mail off the Flavio asking him what I might have done wrong in the settings and that seemed to be his standard reply to my questions…

As much as i hated/disliked doing the REVERT to default
It always seemed to work for any issues I had with n-Track…

If you had n-Track doing what you wanted it to do, this might be something you can consider doing…
It might get you back-and-running…

Who knows
????

Thanks for your advice.

The conclusion is that midi start/stop from an external controller works exactly as it should. With the external sync enabled (in this case for midi clock) and the studio in a play mode, I can start and stop repeatedly from my footswitch (on the RC-50).

In the record mode, only 1 start is accepted.

This program is much better than the two other apps I tried for my application: one or two guitars playing over some midi tracks and recording through the amps with microphones. I use a Lexicon USB audio/midi interface and a slightly underpowered Dell 4600 with a second hard drive for audio.

Thanks again, hope I can help others with similar issues.

in MIDI sync settings - set FREEWHEEL to 0.00.01 - default (on my version of N) is 0.00.11 - that means that N will run for 11 seconds after sync is removed - lower PREROLL as well to make N lock to incoming MTC quicker

I have them both set to 0.0.0. Could that be a problem?

BTW -

I have previewed/trial tested several DAWs lately - looking for a better sync with my RC-50, although there is really only one thing laking in this setup (multiple starts/stops with record on).

To make a long story short, I couldn't get this good a performance with any of the $300-$400 studios. I'm not saying that the other features aren't worth their price, but n-Track actually works with midi clock and most of them don't even claim to (MTC only - and my box doesn't transmit MTC).

I have other good things to say about n-Track as well.
