moving to 64 bit laptop?

should I?

I have read similar posts but I am still not clear on some things. I have been using ntrack for many years. I have lots of plugins I don’t want to lose. I use Firepod.

I need a new laptop. The ones I am looking at are 64 bit Vista with 4 gig ram. If I get this computer will I have to go to 64 bit ntrack? Would the 32 bit version work in Vista 64? If I do go to 64 bit ntrack will my older plugins work or do I have to get new ones?
Would it make any difference if I work on tracks recorded prior?

Thanks,

Joseph

First up, check your hardware drivers (soundcards etc) to see if 64 bit drivers available.
No your older plugs 32 bit won’t work in 64bit apps, they won’t show up.
Yes 32 bit nTrack runs just fine on 64bit machines.

There is development for a wrapper that works 32bit plugs in 64bit apps. Under development and I’m waiting to see how it turns out.

I’m running Vista x64 with nTrack (32bit and 64bit) with no problems. Desktop PC using an E-Mu soundcard.

So you are saying I could run my 32bit ntrack in a Vista 64bit laptop and my 32 bit pluggins will work as they do now. That would be fine. I would only have problems if I went with the 64 bit ntrack?

I use a Firepod. Would I use the 32bit Firepod driver or the 64 bit driver if using 32 bit ntrack?

Yaz is napping right now - check back after his wake-up call…

I think it’s the application that determines the capabilities. If you run a 32 bit app on a 64 bit OS, then that app will not have access to the speed increase or the memory increase assosciated with the 64 bit OS. The 32 bit plugins will work with the 32 bit app. So in essence things will be same as if you were running on a 32 bit OS.
So for some, it doesn’t make sense to upgrade to a 64 bit OS if their main apps and hardware is 32 bit oriented. Unless they are sure that there are 64 bit drivers for their hardware, and that they are satisfied with the present lack of 64 bit plugins.

Yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnn, mmmmmmmm, I’m up!
The driver is for the OS so you’ll need the 64bit driver for Windows to see the Firepod. Once Windows sees your soundcard/input device you can run either app 32 or 64 nTrack.

Well looking at the Presonus site the driver is for Vista or XP 32 and 64 bit systems. Firmware update is required for the last driver. The only factor involved is the latop itself whether it’s capable of handling audio multitracking. Can’t help you there since I don’t use laptops.

This just in, am beta testing a VST wrapper that allows 32 bit plugs in 64bit apps. Tried it with Sir1 and Voxengo Boogex . . . works like a charm. Will keep eveyone posted on this development.

Here’s the link from KVR for anyone wanting to try the 32bit to 64bit VST wrapper. Works great here.

Instructions in the zip folder, had to play around with asio settings to get it to work, but it does work!
I’ve used Sir1, Voxengo Boogex, and ProteusVX in x64 apps.
