new stuff

more crap spewing forth

Hey all-
I just finished recording and mixing a new project called “there will be time for sleep”. I have posted the first song on the soundclick site as a preview, the rest will be up soon. It’s acoustic-based pop, but i left a lot of loose ends to have it sound more raw. There are timing issues, pitch concerns, and random sounds like furnaces kicking on and off, furniture squeaking, and kids passing through. It’s crap like the other stuff, just lighter and less developed.

Enjoy (although not likely!)

to hear “o! right, i don’t have magic powers (yet)”:

John, that kills. From what I hear I wouldn’t change a thing. I like everything about it. You were right to leave it raw.

Could you tell me about the bass - what kind it is, how it was played and recorded? Also the drums.

thanks tom, and gladly i will tell you the info.
drums-horrible drummer (like everyone claims, but in my case it’s actually true!)- all I have is a moderately cheap snare and a ride (Zildjian 21" sweet ride) that I really love.
Recorded with my only mic (some behringer vox mic) in one take (not the first, of course) with a very slight reverb just to stereoize it.
bass- i’ve purported myself to be a bassist for almost 20 years, but still don’t have any kind of rig.
therefore the bass is recorded dry and straight into the mixer and into the soundcard. then in the mix there is a chain of 5 effects to beef it up:
1-steady(compressor/limiter/expander type of thing)
2-helian2 bass amp
3-blood overdrive
4-voxengo boogex (guitar amp simulator for amp cabinet sound)
5-15 band eq highly tweaked

all these effects are free downloads. my severe budget limitations limit me in the gear department (i still love my kids).

there are seven more songs to the project, all of which are mixed, and will be posted in the next couple of days, and i’ll let you folks know.
keep rockin! (or r&b’in, or country’in, or bluegrass’in, or whatever you guys do)

What kind of bass?

I think the drums work quite well. Really. I like that sound. It’s all very musical.

thanks again for the kind words.
bass=fender p-bass (pawn shop special), just like guitar (japanese strat copy pawn shop special) mic’d through a pignose and piano (on upcoming songs) (ensoniq circa '82 synth pawn shop special).

Wait - the bass was through a pignose? One of those little ones, and not one of their newer tube ones?

The Ensoniq - a Mirage? ESQ1?

bass straight to mixer. elec guitar through pignose (yeah, one of the old little ones-love that sound) cranked and mic’d about 1 1/2-2 feet back to get some room resonance and wavelength development.
the ensoniq is an esq-2, i think (it’s back buried in the garage or i’d check to make sure). It’s about 50-60 pounds and I had to carry it 19 blocks through downtown portland from the pawn shop to my car (i didn’t think i had time on my lunch break to drive and try to park/repark). that was 4 years ago and my arm still hurts-it’s a beast!
