I downloaded & installed N-Track ver 6 a few days ago and I have had nothing but problems.
There were so many crashes and freezes that eventually I had to restore a hard-drive Image to get my computer working again.
Win Vista Home Premium, SP1
4 Gig Ram
Athlon 64 X2 5600 Processor, 2.8 GHz.
Lots of disk space.
My soundcard is just the on-motherboard Realtek ALC888 audio codec.
Is that my problem ?
It has mic in, line in, headphone out, and SPDIF Out.
I can get N-Track to do a little, but there are so many crashes that I have sort of lost patience trying to get it to be really useful.
I am an acoustic engineer by profession, so I am familiar with setting levels, routings, etc; and have lots of experience with the Roland VS1680, and the new Micro BR, but I wanted to be able to edit .wav files on the computer.
Any advice ?
Hi Nimmy:
Sundays are somewhat slow around here…
Be patient and maybe you’ll get some replies to your issues…
It looks like you have enough computer for the task…
There’s lots of computer freaks around here…
They should be able to get you on the right track and all…

What sound driver are you using? The MME drivers are usually the ones that will always work, although they are not the best for usage. But check to see what kind of drivers your computers sound card uses. Then check the bit rate of the sound card and the settings in n-track. If you are trying to record 24 bit to a 16 bit card there will be problems and N-track has a way of devaulting to 24 bit.
These are just guesses.
I have three computers with Realtec sound technology and none of them will work properly. Howerer, that is not to say none do (obviously, most do or they would be out of business).
Hi Nim,
Your using vista. Suppose you should read this if you haven’t tweeked your vista.
Quite some time ago I had this scenario:
I plugged in a 24bit card(sound blaster) and left ntrack default for 24bit recording at 48000hz.
I added a big fat drum track with some thick ntrack reverb and then clicked record to add a second track. nTracked just stared at me as if to say; “R U kiddin me?” A major freeze to say the least. I just poped the battery and retried a few more times with the same big freeze. Then googled; “vista tweeks” and what I found made vista run like xp. I also removed the vista desktop image and removed animation from the cursor. Thats all I’ve done so far but can record with no prob now, with only 512 mgs of ram!
The cause: Vista has a Microsoft program called “SuperFetch” set to monitor user key stokes and what programs one opens. This works by giving those frequented programs priority when loading in the future. Doesn’t work for gamers or free spirited recording folks such as us.
Here’s the tweak I found, first timers remember to back up your registry before trying this.
G/luck.

Run/regedit
I disabled SuperFetch entirely by changing…
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\EnableSuperfetch
to 0 (from the default of 3).
If you can’t find the key, just search for EnableSuperfetch in Regedit.
Hope this helps,
Levi
I can disable Superfetch by unchecking it inside msconfig. No need to edit the registry.
But I will hold off on this until I get more feedback. Is disabling superfetch a commonly required tweak for N-track ?
Drivers: After the first few errors I set all my drivers to MME 16 bit 44.1 kHz.
That solved some specific error messages, but I still had a crash during recording.
Thanks so far.
How many people have really wrung out N-Track on Vista ?
In N are you using Settings/Prferences/Options - use .Net Framework?
Might try toggling just to see if any change in program behavior.
I’ve had this problem every time I’ve upgraded.
While my specific situation may differ from yours, in my experience, I’ve generally come to realize that casting explictives generally doesn’t help too much. That said, you do feel better for a little while.
lol
Seriously, try emailing Flavio - I’m sure he can help…

Here is a search that might help.
Vista Music Tweaks
This is a pretty common issue for anyone just starting on new recording software.
I’ve seen it on this site and a bunch of others too.
Its sort of hard to pinpoint because there are so many factors from both the N side and the OS side.
I would first make sure the OS is not gonna interfere.
Thats simpler than trying to setup N and continuously battle the OS…imo.

I hit some good ideas in some of the Vista Tweaks articles.
Ironically, I had already set up my system in accordance with most of the suggestions, but omitted the simplest one: Turn off the UAC (User Account Control)
That is a common “bug-simulator” for a lot of programs.
Maybe I will start a separate thread for N-Track+Vista users if there isn’t already one.
Thanks.
I have been doing some research, and it seems like I should be able to use the WaveRT drivers with the Realtek ALC888 audio chipset. (Right ?) But I would always get an error message when trying to select an input or output device with those settings.
When the only change I made was to Windows MME it would help.
Any comments ?
Narrow down if it is a driver problem or an N problem. Try another app and see if you have the same issue. Most DAWs offer demos you can test with.

I don't think so Bubba...

WOW…An influx of new users… er…names…hummm.
You know, there’s nothing wrong with using your old name. I had my say and it’s done with.
Well, this is my first time here, and my only name. That’s all I know about it.

Meh... it was just a quick drive by posting... not to be repeated.

PS Sorry Nimmy... for polluting your thread. Good luck...
have a look here -
http://www.soundonsound.com/forum/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=PCMus
see if your system is up to the job - because in the DAW world dual/quad core units with 4 gig or RAM means diddly squat - there are a loads of other things in a PC/Laptop that are far more important- ALSO LOOK AT THE DPC LATENCY FORUM - DELL comes out very badly here some models being rated as impossible for DAW work -
M.R.
Thaks for the link! The only thing is now that I have the latency checker, I find that my new computer does a worse job then my old one. My AMD with an old Abit board runs less than 100 us. The new Intel quad 4 with a Gigabit board runs at 500us with spikes. And it also responds slower to software - go figure.
fortunately, I have the old one set up inthe studio - looks like it’s the old one to record and the new one for internet.

He hasn’t chimed in with any tests with other DAWs… you still broke?
