Plug-in recommendations for new user

plug-ins

At the recommendation of the folks on the Zoom PS-04 forum (http://www.2090.org/zoom/bbs/index.php), I recently purchased n-Track. Man, what a lift after working (or not working) with Cakewalk. I’ve already whipped up a “proof of concept” version of George Harrison’s Isn’t it a Pity with 11 tracks and two or three plug-ins for each track. Not in a million years could I have done that so easily without n-Track.
First question: What plug-ins do the members of this group recommend? Are the plug-ins that come with n_Track generally good enough, or are there others that are way mo better and you can’t live without? Right now I’m using reverb, parametric eq, and compression. I suppose there’s years of study right there, but I’m still interested in your thoughts and recommendations.
You guys have a great forum here. I’m glad to be a part of it now.

Hey Zorro,

Watch the saber dude! You might poke an eye out! :)

The Fasoft plugs are pretty darn good IMO. Another freebie bunch I really like and use a lot are the Kjaerhus Classic plugins. The Master Limiter sees use on just about project I work on. You can find 'em HERE

EDIT: Teryeah beat me to it!

Yes, the Classic plugins are great, and free. I like the compressor and the chrous, some great presets.

some more freebies I use extensively:

Digital fish phones also has the fish fillet, some good stuff there.

I use Endorphin as a limiter on my master channel. Sounds nice. However, the plugin recently began causing my n-track to freeze up. As the machine was three years old, had a lot of stuff installed and taken out, and I was having some other “buggy” stuff going on, I reinstalled Windows XP this weekend. Ah…clean machine now hums and ntrack behaves BEAUTIFULLY ! That’s the problem when you have too much going on on a PC, mucks it up where nothing quite works 100%, but I digress.

WHY HAS NO ONE MENTIONED SIR ?!

It’s the last reverb you will need, until you make a boatload of money and want to spend 10000 dollars. :)

That plus the kjaerhus freebies will keep you going for quite a while.

Because we're nice guys and let you do it, as always :)

Thanks much for the excellent recommendations. I’m on the case.
gtr4him, as a middle-aged defender of the down-trodden, I’ve taken to wearing protective eye-wear over the mask. I’m no longer the most fashionable swashbuckler, but my wife insisted after the kids arrived.

LOL! It happens to us all bro! Same here. Went from fast motorcyles to slow-butt, armor-plated buses to haul the kids around. At least the wife will still let me walk around in the yard bare foot occasionally…

PS DEFINITELY grab SIR reverb. It is excellent!

It's good to have a goal, a function, a role in life, a telos. Thank you! :D

Yea… I got those http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/classic-series.php Toys… The pre-amp is the latest plug… I haven’t used it yet… I have the uni-compressor and the one that comes with the Bundle, with the pre-amp… The db Audio plugs… There’s three or four of them in the bundle… Someone post the link… I’m looking for the Drumagog plug, now… Well. I need some loonies… lol…

Bill…

The plug I cannot live without is Bill Wahl’s MaxX, a limiter that emulates tape saturation as well or better than any I have heard. Sadly, it does not seem to be available any more, so I have put the zip on my site for you folks who do not have it yet. Click here- or right click and choose ‘save as’. It works wonders in the master channel effects, or on individual tracks (although that is not what it is meant for…).

Good luck!
'til next time;

Save your money Bill, try KT Drum trigger instead.

here

It doesn’t have replacement drum samples.

It needs a wee bit of tweaking to get it to work for you.

But, it is free. :)

Tony and Ali, thanks for the links…

Thanks Guys… I’ll look into those links… SEE… Everyone has plugs and stuff in their closets that they just need all the time. I have that Max XX plug… It just works so nice… In the right places…

I’m slowly gravitating to XP, here… I’m trying all the OLD toys I’ve ever used… So far, I see no issues, yet… Except It’s hard on the Gray Matter working between '98SE on some machines and XP on another… I need to reach some decision and get an Operating System that’s the same on all machines… I’ve been playing with this XP and '98SE for about a week now… It’s very mentally fatiguing… < spelling… lol… :p
