punch in

how to?

Happy Holidays to all!
Question: when I try a punch in, the new punch goes to a new track. where can I change this?
Also, if I want mulitple file pieces on one track do i look in the same place as the punch problem?

thx, Lou

You might as well learn this now Lou - right click on the main transport record button - you will see an option for multiple punch ins. Select it and try that. It will record multiple ‘takes’ in a track that you can select later to see which one you like. A new set of icons will appear under the transport control set the punch in and out times there or drag your mouse across the section you want to punch in and it will automatically select that sections time.

First of all though - make sure the track record button is red and ‘armed’ to record.

Hi Poppa,
I did try that and the punch went to a new track. Same happens when I try a copy / paste to the same track. Some box I need to check somewhere?

thx,
Lou

You know what that’s so fundamental I actually don’t recall if n has that option and where it is. I have mine set to only record when a track is “armed” to record. Do you happen to mean another ‘lane’ in the same track?

Someone help me out here now I’m confused.

This may help.
Punch-ins:
View > Toolbar>Punch-in Menu
The Punch-in Tool bar appears.
Click and drag across the section of track where you want the punch - in to occure.
Arm the Track where you want the punch-in to happen.
Also
Check out the settings on the other Icons in the Punch in Menu
The 2nd Icon - looks like a magnifying glass with a Record button - includes choices on how you wnat the punch in to behave.
The 3ed Icon in the toolbar lets you type in the start and stop times for the punch-in

Only thing I know of he’s talking about is the punch-in going to a new lane instead of on top of the first track. How do we turn off lanes again? Maybe that is the problem.

I haven’t tried this in n-Track… I really like the way it works in ‘R’ if Flavio would like to compare? I choose NOT to show takes in lanes while recording… I set up a track, arm it, highlight the area I wish to record in and enable looping. Now I just hit RECORD and play takes over and over until I have one I like or I get disgusted with my lame-butt playing… NOW I choose “Show all takes in lanes…” Press PLAY with looping still enabled and I just click a take to play that take. If I find a keeper, I wack the rest or comp together pieces of multiple takes to get a good one…

Werkz fer me… Just a thought…

PS Apologies to Lou as this really doesn’t answer his question. When I was using n-Track all the time, I never bothered with “Punch-In”. It seemed anachronistic when I had practically unlimited tracks to fool with new ideas or “fixes”… shrug

hey everyone,
When I was using my old version of N…I think 2.3 or so, there were no issues with punch ins…Now it seems so complicated… Anything I try, punch ins, copy & paste to same track will not happen. A new track is always created. That’s the problem…
I do not know what a “lane” is…
The help menu is useless…not even a search function to help solve issues.
So far 6.0 is more frustrating than older versions.
I will try some of the answers above, but
Any further help would be appreciated…
Glad for this forum tho`
Thx again,
Lou

Don’t give up yet. A new manual is being worked on.
The “Punch-in” toolbar is the key to doing what you want. The features really are nice, but it is a bit different than what you are used to. Look over the buttons on this bar and experiment a bit and you will, I think, like the feature. If you do a “punch in” from the regular record button you will probably get a new track, at least I do - I think that is the default to avoid recording a new track onto an existing track (many folks are recording different Tracks, not Takes and that is considered the norm.)
After you have set the options in the Punch-in toll bar’s menu items. use the Record button on the Punch-in toolbar(the first button on the left) to start punch-in recording instead of the regular button.
I hope this helps. Keeps us posted.

punch in records to the same track OK - paste, pastes back (on top) of the copy section OK - so all is working correctly here (version 6 0 2 build 2431)- suggest you reinstsll N and and start completely with new prefs (not from an older version) as you may have upset something -
