random youtube video of the day

acoustic tapping

Stumbled on this video of a guitarist doing some tapping/rhythm acoustic guitar. I thought it was da bomb. Thought I’d share it…

Nice one Geoffo. Did you give it a go?

Nice. Open tuning of some sort?

Yeah, interesting, I googled lap Tapping, this guy Erik Mongrain is all over it,
this link contains video of his playing, says it is open tuning

I thought it was open Q-sharp?

Better then open Q-tip (thats the tuning that pokes your eardrums out).

I tried it out in drop D, Tony, but I didn’t get anywhere.

FACFAF?

Sounds reasonable.

I use a strange tuning on many of those doodle recordings I did a long time ago. It starters out as dropped D, but evolved by ear. I don’t remember the final tuning, but it’s hard with a standard set of strings.

DADADE

Low E down to D
Standard A and D
G up to A
B up to D
Standard high E

I know that’s not where it ended up, and that particular tuning may be too funky. It also is hard to do with standard A440. I’m pretty sure the bottom was probably down to C if not lower with the rest relative to that. That’s why standard gauge strings don’t work too good.

That was the starting place and all that I remember right now. I should go back to that and see if I can come up with the final tuning. It was really cool and fat sounding, though it would confuse real guitarists…something I’m not a flicted with. It made for easy strange but lush sounding chords.
