Record 16 bit with 24 bit card?

Can I?

A while back, someone on this helpful forum thought that I might NOT be able to use my 16 bit version of n-track with a new 24 bit soundcard (such as Soundblaster Live! 24 bit).

I’m thinking that I could simply set my recording to 16 bit via the “Select Audio Format” on the “Settings” button on the “Recording VU Meters,” RIGHT?
Any commentary on this would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Specs of your card from the Creative site:

It will work fine for 16 bit

64 audio channel playback with independent sample rates
24-bit Analog-to-Digital conversion of analog inputs at 96kHz sample rate
24-bit Digital-to-Analog conversion of digital sources at 96kHz to analog 5.1 speaker output
16-bit and 24-bit recording with sampling rates of 8, 11.025, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48 and 96kHz
SPDIF output up to 24-bit resolution at selectable sampling rate of 44.1, 48 or 96kHz

in the playback and recording vu meters, there is a “force 16 bit” check box. Check it.

You will notice that if you do not DRAMATICALLY lower your input volume before recording, that your wav files will appear to be clipped completely. they will sound fine, just look funny.
