Rescanning VST folder & Windows firewall

Build 2446

Rescanning VST folders, I’m prompted to unblock VSTScan by Windows’ Firewall. I’ve never been prompted like this before.

Can anyone shed some light on why rescanning a VST folder would cause this?

Cheers,
F

Just ran a scan F_H - no problems here - wonder if it’s another Op sys bug? Or maybe you have a bad .dll somewhere?

Did it send a crash report? Or just stop working?

Didn’t stop working–just wants me to unblock a port during the scan.

Odd, huh?

Could be one of your plugins is trying to phone home (use the internet)
Some do for update purposes.

Yeah that ^^^^…

I hate software that does that. At least Flavio gives you the option to turn “Check website for updates” OFF for n-Track.

I bet you have a plugin wanting to phone home…

D

Interesting (I just installed some Reaper VST’s).

Do you guys think there’s any danger in allowing them to phone home?

F

First - remove the plugs you think are guilty and re-scan to make sure
it’s really them. If you are still getting the message, track down which plug(s)
it is.
Then you got to ask yourself is this gonna happen each time I start N?
Or is it just a one time phone home thing. (or every week or whatever)
If it is, then I would find another plug to use. Personally, I wouldn’t want
my production machine on the net unless it’s validating software.
Just my trillion cents.

I have been using Reaper since V 0.86 or something with n-Track installed and have never had the plugins want access to the web. Reaper also has the “Don’t check for new versions” option, but that is for the main program. I doubt seriously if that is the culprit.

Dead–

Indeed, it was the Reaper effects prompting the Unblock.

I’ve removed them from the Shared VST folder.

…sorry, Seven–thanks for the advice.

Dead–I wonder if the Reaper DLLs I DL’d were tainted.

JASON IS WATCHING YOU !!! - YOUR EVERY MOVE IS SENT DIRECTLY TO COCKOS HEADQUARTERS -

M.R.

Who is Jason?

D

Jason

LOL!

However, as usual where Reaper is concerned M.R. is wrong. The thing causing the VSTScan to pop the firewall is the ReaStream plugin. This plugin allows streaming of audio across a network connection. Thus it looks for an open TCP/IP or UDP port. Delete that single plugin and VSTScan won’t fuss at you. OR allow it to detect an open port and put it to use if you like.

All of the ReaPlugs are excellent tools. Be a shame to dismiss them outright due to false information.

Doesn’t mean Jason isn’t watching…

Dead–

Brilliant, thank you!
