Ripped while helping

Hi davet2:

Thank you for the reply and link…
What a great read…
I will have to re-read it, maybe several times to absorb all the information that’s in there…
The text is full of links…
For me to take it all in I think I need to follow the links…
From what I see there…
Operating a LAN is no easy task…
Certainly, trying to operate one machine is not the answer…
Well, for me and the setup I have…
I can barely operate one machine and keep it maintained…

I have run into another issue
on this P-111 rebuild…
It just don’t stop…
I began to download all the Microsoft updates and security files…
only to find they wouldn’t install…
Every time I boot-up the files are waiting to install…
They should install at shut-down time…
but the machine shuts down before the applications begin to install…
I believe there is some kind of condition on this build that’s not allowing the Microsoft updates to install…

I wish I knew…
I believe that this SP 3 is a mix of all the Service Packs before it… and they’re adding to it almost every week…
I see no reference to SP 1 or that series…
and SP 2 … on the update page… AND…
this SP 3 is is full of issues, or so…
I see references pointing to it’s issues all over the Internet, or
where I visit…
There appears a lot of negativity toward it…
I didn’t have many issues develop on this setup after I installed it, that I could relate to…
Except slow Browser start-up behaviour… Then…
I got HIT…
Late June…

BoY…
There’s a lot of Hate around toward Microsoft…
If it would only be directed toward Microsoft…
and not the users of Microsoft…

Bill…

Somehow, I hate to continue with this build now that I have all these issues before it’s even flying…

I’d like to think that these files are not removed-or-erased…
They are misplaced to another folder/file/drive…
or something like that…
n-Track…
when updated from a previous build defaults all the files and data to the C:/my Documents/my Music

by default…
right away… after installing a new build I go into preferences>paths
and reset the path for the current project(S) to that folder/hard drive/ whatever…

I don’t hope I sound like I know…
I can’t even find the two nickles I used to have in my pocket…

I have a feeling you have some infected software that
you are installing each time you do a re-build.
The best way to make sure that YOU are not installing
some malware as you build - is to get together a DOS
startup disk with a Virus scan diskette. (Download AVG Free
and make a startup disk - recovery disk I think they call it).
All you need to do is make sure you have the DOS drivers
for your CD/DVD rom drive. Now start checking your install
software, including you MS Windows disks and every single
app that you would install on your hard disk.
A couple of years ago, I got infected with a virus that
corrupted a lot of the utilities I used to install when
doing a ‘fresh install’. It takes time and patience, and
do it methodically, and write down what is good and what
has been corrupted (write it on the CD or DVD).
You may be able to go back later and salvage some stuff
Some MS disks have been known to have viruses on them.
And make sure you are virus free - before you go net-bound.
And when you are, ghost that set-up.

Hi sevenOfeleven:

Thanks for the reply…
As soon as I read it I know I didn’t consider the pain of this…
I might even know the application that is causing me all this…
Panda is telling me but I’m not paying attention to to it’s scan reports…
Way-Back-When…

As I type this reply I don’t have Panda installed yet…
Shame on me…
But…
the install is pretty lengthy…
considering that I have such a download to get all the backlog definitions and get it up to Current and all…
This dial up is gonna cause me to become ill…

I am seriously considering formatting this drive and starting over again…
before I get too far along…
and…
get past the point of no return…
I don’t understand why the updates don’t want to install…
If I don’t get them to run…
it’s almost useless to continue with this build…

My nerves…

When will I ever learn…
????

I have all the 98,98SE updates on CD.
When you get to that point, I’ll put them up for you.
You are supposed to run them one at a time and re-boot each
time. (Personally, I don’t do that - although some are dependent
on others being already installed)
NOTE: To tell you the truth, there only a few that you really need.
i.e USB2.0, and a couple of others I can’t think of right now.
But don’t put all that (security) stuff on a MUSIC 'puter. You need a cheap
(and I mean cheap) barebones 'puter just for the I-net.
And put all the security updates + Virus protection on THAT 'puter.
I mean for dial-up - if that’s what you are useing, an old 300Mhz
Pentium (2?) is all you need. Get a network card so you can Xfer your
downloads. (After they have been Virus-checked).

Back Again:

I hear you sevenOfeleven…
I have to rethink and consider these ideas I have regarding these ideas I have… < (Is that good English ? or what. )
Some may be acceptable while others don’t fit in the plan very well…
It’s been so long sense I’ve had a Creative Spell that if I don’t get a setup running and consistent and stable soon I will have lost the window for tracking that I thought I possessed…
I used to have short periods of computer maintenance and then long periods of creativity of tracking and editing…
Now, it’s completely the opposite…
Very little tracking and editing…
As long as Net Framwork has been around I’ve had computer whozz’s…
I think I can count all the tracks I’ve done on one set of fingers…
RADAR Wayne and I had long drawn out discussions about Windows Base’d tracking versus Turn Key Tracking…
It’s hard to get creative when trying to work out the technical aspects of booting up a computer…
There were several guys around here in the early builds that have moved on to Turn Key machines…
Every once in a while you’ll see them up here Lurking…
I have no idea how they edit …
In-the-Box…
or Outta-the-Box… In-the-Box… has it’s advantages…
At least for me…
when I was around it…
I’d love to have the hours back that I used up this summer, trying to format a Hard drive…
:p

Some of the bestest I ever readed.

I like to use the racecar analogy. You don't
want to put anything that is not geared toward increasing
speed on your racecar. And you also need a testbed before
you add parts to your racecar, to make sure they perform
as expected.
My stuff is so simple - that I only need a few
progies to get my ideas recorded. Those are CoolEdit, Chainer, FL8
N v6 is now part of that because I can work with samples much better.
(Like drag samples from FL to N) very nice.
Two soundcards and an outboard mixer. So I can record new tracks
while monitoring effectively. Chainer handles all the MIDI VSTi stuff.
And N v6 is nice for arranging everything.
No Kontact, Reason, Ableton, ProTools. I'm an amateur. Damnit Jim.
When I get to the point of trying to do final mixes (someday)
then I'll start looking at R or some of the other (route freindly)
progies. Who knows - by that time N may have the routing nailed down.
We are way off topic here - Hope Levi got his files back.

I would reccomend not to keep using that computer because if no file is written in the HD space previously used by your lost files, the info is still there INTACT.

Do a web search for file recovery software. There is tons of it out there. I know this well because I once erased 10 years worth of work data. I worked like hell for 3 days testing file recovery programs, reading the help files, searching in forums but I got it all back using a US$ 70 program whose name I can't recall.

Best of lucks buddy !

:handshake: Thx Gamma, I'll look into that.

A year or two ago I picked this up at BestBuy - iolo Search and Recovery

Recovered a lot of stuff I lost (not all, but a lot) and it has been very good at recovering things I accidentally erased off SD cards.

YMMV - but it isn’t very expensive and seems to do the job.

Yes. iolo is very good. They have/had a free demo which you
can run to see first if the files you want to recover are
indeed recoverable - before you purchase their software.
I had a triple OS system disk that had lost the Master Boot Record,
and iolo did a fine job of finding recoverable files.
Very good indeed.

Thx Bills,
hey what was the deal with Iolo a couple yrs ago. I saw it sold and used along with zone alarm for about a yr. I looked at it then and was surprised to see that it was also a “fire’wall program”. Suddenly it was dropped by zone alarm. That made me a little suspicious of iolo and zone alarm. Suspicious of iolo because they failed to tell zone alarm that they where also a fire wall program?! And then also leary of zone alarm for not knowing about iolo! Just curious about all that.

I could almost bet the program I used was called “Recover my Files”.

Like other guys say, I ran the demo which showed you if your files were recoverable.

The reason I bought this “expensive” software was that it recovered all my files along with the folder structure. You see, what I did was the mother of all stupidities, you would not beleive the amount of files I trashed with a single blow.

Please let me know if I can be of help. PM or email me if you want to Skype about this.

Cheers !
