Satriani Cover Clip

Anderson Classic/Marshall JCM800 Fortin

Been a while since I posted something new here. I feel like I am finally getting my recording setup going (recently switched to Mac from Windows). I used my TAG Classic with no boosts anywhere on this clip. I love the Fortin Cali mod. This is just a short clip of Satch’s new tune called God Is Crying. Very cool tune. Recorded the bass and guitars and made the drums. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Massive fan of Satch and John Petrucci, myself, this sounds very good :)

You have a huge Guitar Sound there…

Not sure if that Sound can be created on a Fender Design Amp…
Marshall and Celestion are very characteristic of Marshall Amps and Celestion Speakers… Nothin else works… :)

What does Fortin Cali do to modify those amps ????
Are you talkin Big Bucks ?

Bill…

Wow. That is fabulous.

So, what do you know about the Fortin Amps? I saw your post at HCF, and infer from that that some folks are critical of the amps. Jeepers, from your tone I can’t imagine why anyone would be.

Also, what’s up with the marshall you are selling?

Thanks! Not sure the tone can be replicated on a Fender. Fender has its own thing going on which is great in my opinion. Mike Fortin is an amp builder out of Canada. He builds his own production line amps (Bones, Natas, Meathead). He also performs mods on Marshall amps. The mod I had him perform is called the "Cali". It is his take on the Jose Arredondo modifications. Jose was well known for modifications made to Eddie Van Halen's amps back in the day. They were made popular by Mark Cameron over the past 10 to 15 years. It is essentially a hot rodded Marshall. It sounds awesome and gives you awesome tones even at bedroom volumes. The mod requires an older Marshall amp (preferably the older the better). I bought a Marshall JCM800 non-master volume for $900 in mint condition. The mod cost me about $700 (included the mod in addition to a series/parallel effects loop). IMO, money well spent since it gave me everything I want in an amp.

Here are some other videos I put together of the amp and my newest guitars I added to my rig, a Tom Anderson Drop Top and a Tom Anderson Classic.

Thanks Tom!

See my post above about Mike's amps and mods. The HCAF seems to have attitude towards the guys over at Rig-Talk. A lot of the players over at Rig-Talk are fans of Marshall (stock or modded) amps. The players are definitely a little older and fans more of the 80s tones and playing for the most part. HCAF seems to be frequented by more modern types of amps and tones. I am in the middle although I gravitate more towards the Rig-Talk crowd. No real big deal other than the HCAF group think that they are overhyped. Coming from an actual owner, they are not overhyped. They sound and play killer! I am not selling my amp. It is everything I hoped for in an amp. Let me know if there is a certain type of clip you would like to hear and I will do my best to replicate some of those tones.

Gibson, I know what you mean by the 80’s sound. I was in LOVE with the tone that Ratt got on the song “Lay It Down”. The newer amps don’t do a lot for me, I guess. I always just ran them straight and used my effects processor to get my tone, although I would have loved to get my hands on a Peavey 5150, they say that’s the closest you will get to EVH’s “brown sound” from the first Van Halen record, without modding your amp…

I spent some time playing around with one of those Peavy 5150s in the local guitar satan. I loved it.

I owned a 5150 II a few years back. Great amp that's for sure.

I have a feeling that the mod is an adjustable gain pentode design in the preamp stage, versus a triode gain stage in the “Front-end”… of that amp…

Sounds nice, for the application of playing styles… Can the map and sound be made to sound like a normal “Clean” sound Amp ????

Bill…

Nice job! I enjoyed it. Satch’s new cd is awesome. I’m wrapping up a version of “House Full Of Bullets” I’ll throw down in a few.

Interesting reply. Usually most people that comment on the guitar tone, how it was recorded, what guitar, etc. I like to head those questions off in advance. Thanks for listening!
