be forewarned: our site is ever so crappy and way out of date. There are many items that are not on the gear list (buncha rack gear and microphones), and a few that should come off (mostly in the list of guitars…). Also the name can be confusing. See, for years we were known as Clava Studio. Then when I took complete control of the place, we had to kill that name for tax purposes. The studio still gets credited as Clava Studio, but the company name is 4 Deuces Recording, Inc. Back in the day, our office space was a speakeasy, and later a legal bar, called Three Deuces. There are 4 partners in our sister company, Perishable Records, so 4 Deuces seemed like a good way to go.
Whatever…best way to contact me is PM here or at: djimbe2004@yahoo.com
Hey, Clava, what did you folks do for John Wesley Harding and Modest Mouse? I wonder if I have some of your work.
You have none of my personal work, Tom. I rarely if ever work for clients (that day job thing gets in the way). Much of the work on that client list was done by a guy named Brian Deck, who designed our space and was our first chief engineer. Back in those days, I was either just an interested bystander, or a minority owner. I took complete control after Brian left for Engine Studios, just to keep the studio alive and in “the family”. Perishable Records, and my partners in Califone, still need a cheap (i.e. free) place to record…
I’m not sure which John Wesley Harding record Brian did. I do know that the very first session that happened in Clava Studio was Moon and Antarctica by Modest Mouse. I just found some photos of that session, and the place wasn’t even finished. Bare drywall, and crappy sound absorbers just thrown up on the walls. And no gear to speak of. Brian was much more about working “in the box” in those days. Me? I like finished walls and gear to play with…
HAH! I read the 4Deuces Rates document… I LOVE this one under “Terms and Conditions”…

Way to go clava! I hate it when my son and I are working on mixes and his “buds” drop by…
TG
yeah, TG, our place is not designed or intended for partying. We don’t have much of a lounge, we don’t really have a kitchen space, and we got no fancy couches or video games. We have instruments and recording equipment, and lots of both…
I’ve had some minor misgivings about that particular phrase, and will more than likely rephrase it whenever I get around to having the site properly updated. The sentiment remains though. We are NOT about renting out the studio for a party. You wanna party? Go somewhere else. You wanna track? Bring it on. There are professional musicians (i.e. people who make their living solely from performance) working out of our office/studio, and I will not have them inconvienenced or their gear mishandled. More than anything else, the studio exists to help defray the cost of running 2 money losing businesses (a record label and a studio) that my friends and I are involved in. Fortunately, the people who work with us are almost all performing musicians as well, and they don’t have the time or the money to screw around. I’ve been very lucky in that regard…
