are they worth exploring?
So who wants to give me the run down on using soundfonts ?
If you’re a lone player like me, they can’t be beat. I mean, with soundfonts you can have pretty much anything in your music you want…horns, strings, kbds, choirs, drums, synths…
On the other hand, if you have a group of players you can record or if your taste is basic…there really isn’t that much of a need.
I have read that a lot of soundtracks are done using mostly midi and soundfonts.
With them there is a lot you can add to projects. Without them there is lot you can’t add…

Soundfonts are sampled sounds played like GM sounds, so they can sound quite good - or bad, depending on how well they are made.
Loads of them out there.
There are issues sometimes, e.g., with looping points for piano samples.
Nice article on wikipedia:

I remember getting a whole lot of soundfonts here:
http://www.hammersound.net/
thanx guys
I’ll check 'em out
basically, here is how i remember…
a) create a blank track, add your soundfont player as an effect on that track…(so far, there is no sound)
b) create a midi track and route it to the above track.
whatever instrument or sound your sound font player is armed with is what you will hear from the first track.
you can change the instruments to your liking, you can copy your midi track and send that one to a soundfont track that is playing a different instrument or sounds.
here are some free SF players that are pretty good…
Green Oak - Crystal
Short Circuit
here are some links to sites where you can get soundfonts to LOAD INTO THE SOUNDFONT PLAYER…
KVR audio
Huge List
Virtual Instruments
you can get plenty of help from a bunch of the people here. in fact, if you look up my past posts you will probably find a whole section where i was being taught about midi…there was some great help there…i’m still grateful

Poppa - how are you?
Here’s a pretty good intro to sampling -
and some good related links to the upper left of the page.

Sampling is as much of an art as music itself.
So you should feel right at home with it.
I bees fine… I’m just not sure if all this is going to be a distraction or a blessing…
I’ll explore a little and see what I come up with.
Thanks a lot guys for all the input - some great stuff.
Well, given that soundfonts work just like VSTi and have lots of the advantages of sampling, I suspect it’ll work out about as well as VSTi with the advantages of sampling.
