sounfont size limit

vsti

hi folks, many thanks for your help in the past

i now have v6, the latest build, and i’m having problems loading soundfonts any larger than 1 meg - this goes for both of the free soundfont players that i have: font! take1

it says on the blurb for take1 that it can load fonts up to 200megs, so i’m confused

tom

fujitsu amilo 1.7g celeron
448mb ram
350gig iomega external hard drive
n-track 6 build2392
line6 ux2

Your 448 mb of ram looks a little low to be using big files with. That may be your problem.

Memory UpGrade

Jest Moon, fyi, the color of your font is very hard to read on some computers (that would be mine for sure). I thought you might like to know, because if we can’t read it, we can’t help.

Agree with Poppa.
Although you may have enough mem, check
’Windows Task Manager’ CTLR/ALT/DEL (for XP)
and look under ‘Performance Tab’ - then look
at physical memory available. May be too low.
And please no more light blue text.

Hi Gents:

Left-click and drag your mouse over the print…
Comes up enough to see it…

Something like a copy-and-paste…

Bill…

[EDIT] Eye fatigue… big-time…

sorry about the font, i’ve fixed it now

the available memory while im running n, google chrome and mobile broadband (huawei) is 110megs, i would have thought that was plenty, am i wrong?

cheers

Something else may be limiting besides available system memory, or the failure to load isn’t really a memory problem.

Some (maybe most) sound fonts need all sample memory to be in large contiguous chunks of physical ram. You may have enough ram total, but it could be fragmented so that there isn’t enough in a single chunk. While the soundfont may be only a meg it’s possible the players are trying to allocate more (for whatever reason) and there is a failure.

The only way to know for sure is to put more memory in and see if there is a change.

Something to try is to cold reboot the machine - TWICE or more - and don’t run ANYTHING except the n-Tracks and the soundfont player.

Check to see how fragmented the hard drive is.

Also, check to see how large the virtual memory is set. MAYBE there is enough system memory, but the virtual memory is too small. This is sort of backwards from requiring physical ram.

Being limited to 1 meg when there is 110 megs free seems wrong. I agree something is funky.

thanks phoo

cold rebooted twice
ran n-track with nothing else
upped page file size and rebooted, no difference so i let the system handle it, currently 669megs - still no difference

checked the hard drive, no need to defrag says windows

i will order new ram and see if that fixes it, meanwhile any other ideas are more than welcome

cheers

by the way, the limit seems to be exactly 1meg as far as i can tell - everything over 1meg fails to load, and everything under 1meg loads

which sf player are you using?

currently take1, which according to the blurb can handle fonts way bigger than anything i have

but it does the same thing with font!1.2

I’m gonna D/L it (Take 1) and take a look-see.
I’m wondering if there is a limit in the VSTi format.
(ya know as opposed to a stand-alone sf player)

Nice proggie - however I don’t have a sf2 that even
comes close to over 100megs. (what the heck are
you trying to load?) Give me a link for a sf over 100megs.
It does work for you for anything under 100?

He says it failing for anything over ONE meg…not AHUNERD. That’s why I say something’s funky.

Is this them??

OK -
Yeh I was wondering - 100M sf -that’s BIG
I’ve got Take 1 running on my laptop w/ 512M
and it handles anything I throw at it.
Loaded a 2.4M sf2 and all is well.
I don’t think mem is a prob.

p.s. Make sure you are trying to load .sf2 and not a .fxb
To do that click on the “Load” in the SF window.

thanks sevenOfeleven

by the way, what program is that youre using for the sf player?

Well the program is Take 1 (running stand alone).
The soundfont is some cheesy synth I D/L’d for a test.
(because I didn’t have any large .sf2 files).
Actually I’ve been looking for just such a program,
- so in this crazy world your prob became my solution.
The nice thing about Take 1 is the little T in the left corner
of the keyboard that let’s you toggle your key presses to stay
on. ‘Excellent’.
What I meant to say is that my laptop represents a minimal
machine and you ‘should’ be able to run this progie with
no probs. But I’m not sure what your issue could be.
Do you get an error message when you try to load a .sf2?
