Thinking ..... Dobro

Researching dobros, tons out there and I have no idea what to look for or at. Anyone have any experience with a decent sounding, easy playing, dont break the bank, brand/model? Besides 2 cones, what is the difference between 1 and 3 cones? Metal body or wood? Fan or a spider resonator?

Hi Duff,
Do you want a round or square neck?

I have a square neck Regal RD 30, does ok for my playing skills (since I suck at Dobro) about $325 new one. Nothing to get excited about but doesn’t suck either.

Square or Round? Hell…I dont know.
I have a cheapo Strat knock-off my duaghter plays that once in a great while I add a Golden Gate extension nut to, to lay down slide tracks. Never tried playing lap style, with Stevens Bar.

Just thinking I want a dedicated acoustic slide. Want to spend some time experimenting with fretting behind the slide…

Will look up the Regal.

Then you want a round neck resonator guitar.

Then you want a round neck resonator guitar.

With decent "standard" playability. Otherwise, you'll need gorilla sized forearms to play the thing.

A friend has a Fender round-neck resonator that ain't bad. About 300 bux at the Fiend.

Hi Duff,
Beats me.
They are all to expensive for me so far.
But I would love one for some songs.
I"m thinking that you could do like the originals.
Break an acoustic over someones head then find a shiny hub cap to fill the void and fix it with.
Wa la home'made doboro. Think that's how they originated.
Maybe not quite exactly like that but, think about it.

What he said

I did a bunch of research about a year ago and bought a low end Johnson roundneck.
Its ok for what I do and the price was good.
Got to use heavier gauge strings that I’m used to but, hey…

Here’s the thread

Duff,
I just checked out the musicianfriend magazine for doboros.
There all pretty average priced and nice guitars that you could get for 15 dollars a month using their credit.

Levi,

Thanks for the info, but I hate buying instruments I dont play first, and I never use credit on items that are a grand or less unless they have 0% interest for a least a year. And I just bought myself a new Jeep Commander Limited with everything on it except the DVD player & backup camera. So right now I am spending my time and $$$ tricking out the exterior of my new ride.

Duff

WHAT!? NO BACK-UP CAMRY!?
And yo call yourself an American!?!?!

So you did get the pimary camera - just no backup camera :p

But Duff think how cool a chrome doboro would look mounted on the gun rack if it had one!
Yea its best to play them first!
But for me, no guitar is a bad guitar.
peace

Hmmmm…

Un-American, primary camera, gun rack. Now I wish I would have got it so I could see your faces as I back over you…LOL
