Ugh - just freekin' UGH!

mind if I cry on yer shoulder?

Well the new line 6 controller has so far been another lesson in what not to get into.
Of course the shipped software is out of date - went through that update process for hours - hours. As some prefer, my DAW stays off line so I have to transfer everything. I finally gave that up and put it online to my wireless network. The Ableton software it came with - same story - would not even install - of course that caused problems with nTrack in some godawful globland of 0’s and 1’s. Sometime after midnight I finally got to plug in the controller. Went through set up in n - added a new midi track - added new instrument DK strings… cpu went to 100 % and sat there seized until I finally rebooted… did this 3-4 times finally gave up…
The problem is, all this gets me to where I don’t even want to write songs anymore, and that’s heartbreaking to me.

Oh man… I hate to hear it Poppa. You made a mistake I learned the HARD way to avoid; When dealing with a new hardware device, do the very basic, simplest driver/hardware install. Leave the rest of the shiny CD’s and demo garbage in the box or on the conglomeration of 0’s and 1’s on the EVERYTHING HERE CD. I really hate those CD’s… I’d much prefer a CD for the hardware, a CD for junky demo product “A”, a CD for junky demo product “B” etc… of course I don’t know if that’s what Line 6 are doing, but I would not be surprised at all.

Maybe uninstall all that stuff and start from scratch? Get the basic stuff working first and go from there. Also, make sure you are using a good USB port local on the MOBO. No hubs. Some of these things don’t like hubs. Powered or non-powered…

D

forget the free ableton, it not very good and the full version soon loses its appeal - you will soon find ableton to not live up to its promise, its a two trick pony and like a pony it is very hard to train –

i dont have DK strings, but as i have suggested before SYNTH1 (yes it has strings) will not crash you out immediately - i have CHEESE MACHINE a string synth, its free and standalone so no need for N and it is a good MIDI starter - ORGANISED a B3 clone is also good and free -

Dr J

You just made my point D - why would one not get a program for a purchased product that worked out of the box? Why?

They made it - I bought it.

I can see it now - Here’s your new car Mr. Willis - oh by the way - you need to go to NAPA and buy a new set of sparkplugs - the ones that came with it don’t work for you 'cause you have green eyes.

Pardon my french but it’s bullshit.

Oh I agree and completely empathize… Many manufacturers push their gadgets to market with unproven or barely useful software. While the products sits in warehouses they are busily working on the drivers AND using the buying public for BETA testers. (Sound familiar?) It’s all about profit. Now you have your shiny new gadget with a CD full of outdated software because it sat in a warehouse during the six or eight months the “BETA testing” was going on. It seems EVERYBODY releases hardware before the software is ready and we the public suffer.

A couple guys on the ‘R’ forum have the KB37. They went through the same “driver shuffle” and setup issues you describe. Once over that hurdle though, they love their KB37’s.

Keep your chin up. You’ll get 'er figured out. (Or boxed up and sent back to Sweetwater!) :p

D

Yep - Dr J - the synth loads faster and doesn’t soak up cpu but still not a sound out of the controller.

By the way - I’d like to apologize for saying bullshit - I meant horseshit.

the drivers are written MONTHS in advance of the equipmemt being released, it possibly worked on the factory test PC, but that may have been two or three years ago -

it is very hard to tell when equipment was made and it could have been original stock - so it could be 2 or three years old yet was released last year and you bought it yesterday - that is why they always say check for driver updates, as D says the first buyers are the BETA testers for the factory -

i agree with D, DUMP the freebies they only confuse the issue - you can install them later AFTER ITS WORKING AND ITS WORKING IN NTRACK -

everybody seems to be giving away their version of ableton live - ive tried it and after the first week it was never used again - MIDI can at first be confusing enough without having to plough through another and not that helpfull app is just asking for trouble -

so you have to look at it logically CAN YOUR PC handle a VSTi, from what you say it seems unlikely, if that is the case then neither ableton, R of what have you will cure the problem - a VSTI is a VSTi no matter what application runs it - if your PC maxs out on DK strings you may have to forgo MIDI untill your system is upgraded -

Dr J

your analogy about a new car is perfect.
I agree with DOC that Ableton is a novelty that
wears off quickly.
Hardware drivers can be removed easier than the software
mess that gets installed.
Thanks for sharing your (PAIN) 'cus it’s a reminder
that when you have a good setup that does what you
want, you have to ‘ghost’ that setup, so you can
minimize the impact of cr** software and hardware
updates. I’m learning - use a seperate disk to
save your music, and keep a ghost of a setup that
works good.
Saves hours of pain and misery!
Hope you can roll back without pulling a WOX(ASUS).

Thanx guys for the cheese.

I finally got the line 6 drivers tweaked and sound out of it. This is going to be a whole new way of recording for me.

First of all the line6 takes the place of what I’ve been using for years my Tascam US122 - my old friend is now unplugged. The kb37 is just a glorified effects box with midi capability and 37 keys in my mind. I can always use it for guitar sounds I guess. I should have known though - the demo video on the line6 site never showed a word about it’s midi and keyboard use.

The asio drivers that came in the update are real solid in n though - better than the patched up tascam vista drivers. What else, Oh, it’s real pretty.

I told D he could have it if I didn’t like it - I’ll give it a month or so and hope I end up loving it. I’d just hate to have a reaperhead get a new toy for free.

I like Line6 and have had good luck with their products but I avoided the ‘freebie’ Ableton like the plague.

Scaled down versions of commercial software are rarely worth the trouble of installing.

Not everyone out there is a Flavio (you know, dedicated to making things work for his users).

Hi Gents:
RADAR Wayne eluded to what you’re saying in your opening topic post, Poppa Willis… I described to him how much technical energy I’d put into my studio to get ready to start a project and prepare to begin tracking… When I got it ready to push the RECORD Button… and … if something went amiss during the tracking session by maybe pushing the wrong button, (for want of a better description), I’d have to halt the tracking session to figure out what I accidentally did wrong… Then, when I got back to tracking the creative moment had passed…

The Creative Moment can’t be abused by Recording Technicalities…

Bill…

I’m Back Again:

I hope you don’t mind me giving you a nickel’s worth of free advise…
regarding protecting your DAW from the Internet…
I’m sure we’ve all heard hard-luck stories about someone we know loosing tracks, failed hard drives, and hard-earned/worked for mixes by connecting their DAW’s to the Internet…
Over the past six years I can report to you that all of that has happened to me, with my setup…
It’s very depressing…
It’s something like describing to someone you’ve been broken into…
I promised myself it would never happen to me again…
Then, it happened again…
I’m only discovering that I’m recovering from a third brake-in attempt/attack…
I believe that what’s wrong with this P-4…
I’m hearing that computers that are used for Audio Production are the most vulnerable to Internet Attack… Microsoft says you have to have a Virus Utility installed on your machines…
If you don’t, you run the risk of attack…
I’ve tried all the Virus Utilities that’s out there…
Some work better than others, but they are not 100% effective…
What’s built by man can be broken into by man…
I’ve tried protecting my DAWs by not connecting them to the Internet…
It doesn’t matter…
When you get hit…
your DAWs are more difficult to repair, when they’re not connected to the Internet…
SO…
You may as well wire them up to the Internet and do the best you can to keep them clean…
Sooner-or-later you have to connect them to the Internet to Up-Date the Operating Systems.
AND ,. ALL…

Bill…

Well I was gonna post something here as to how I can feel your pain Poppa, but…

I’ve stepped in frikkin’ horse and cow turds trying to post something!

And you know I don’t wear shoes dagnabit!

Maybe later I’ll say something nice, right now I’m headed down to the crick to warsh me feet off!

Dagnabithootin’tootin’animalsgoingeverywherearoundhere!

Yaz

Watch fer fish poop! Frog, snappers, muskrat… Everyone and every thing poops.
‘ceptin’ for rocks and wood - well now I’m thinkin’ see what you did!

Aye, everything craps, waiting for my morning solitude in the library.

But then again, I’ve got your mind off your troubles if not more than just a few brief fleeting moments, so my job here is done! :)

Yazzarino

Here’s a cheery thought, Poppa - all of this is still a whole lot easier than trying to get the same results the old way…

No. I mean yes.

Nice as that would be Poppa W, I'd much rather you NOT let that thing get the better of you. Kick it's butt! Show IT who's the boss!

Hang in there...

D

Well about a year or so ago, I had a new pc, new soundcard, lots of ambition and couldn’t get anything to work, spent hours pulling my hair and the soundcard out of the machine. To the point I made a post here about to heck with music and recording and playing in general.
Along comes the nTrack gang for moral support, they (Tspringer and Bruffie) even penned a couple tunes because of my grief, anxiety and general screw it all attitude. I thought it was special that everyone came to my rescue, thanks to all again.

Now that I’ve got it all working in a new 64bt machine, My Muse Hasn’t Blown a Fuse, it simply left town on a jet airplane or Greyhound bus or a Volkswagon Rabbit.

So when the tech side of music really starts to get you down, look for that 10lb sledgehammer and feel the pain!

There’s something wrong with me, ya know!
