98SE Drivers
Hi Gents:
I’m working on installing this '98SE Operating System on the Studio P-4 Machine…
However, I have an issue trying to get the Creative Labs WDM Drivers installed…
I had no issues in the past loading these drivers…
What could I be overlooking or not paying attention to ?
The Device Manager and n-Track both report MME SB wav device (D400)
n-Track also reports MME Device as the default Audio Device…
I’ve downloaded a 9x (4.2 meg.) driver file from Creative Labs
but NO-Go installing that file…
Still MME Drivers…
Bill…
Bill,
There are so many SB’s out there. You gotta take out the card,
find the serial/part# on the card itself - and start googling
’SB + serial/part + driver + download’ something like that.
Also if you are using ATI video - as would all good Canadians,
you can run into install problems with that combo of ATI/Creative
There is a program called ‘Driver Cleaner Pro’ that can be used
to entirely remove ATI and Creative drivers. I have had to use
this to get rid of all ATI and Creative stuff, and do a new
’driver install’ starting with SB then ATI.
BTW - see my post in the Discussion - 'cus I got a question for ya.
Bill is the creative driver a run app, if so you may have to do a virgin re-install of the card, and let the creative run the set up of the driver, not the windows has found new hardware set up.
I know the E-mu is like that and if you let windows install the device it will not see the creative drivers.
Hi Guys:
[EDIT 2}
Thank You Yaz…
I followed your post while installing those drivers
but I didn’t see it until I logged on here before I replied to your post…
I saw Flavio up here earlier this morning…
Lurking around…
I got my fingers crossed that he’ll get busy and upload a build that will install in’98SE…
They are crossed so tight that they hurt…
*
I’m here to report that I have a set of WDM Drivers installed for that S/B 5.1 Audio Card…
It was quite a learning curve…
I played with it (the install process) most of day…
I ended up removing the card…
un-installing the Creative Labs files-and-folders from the add/remove list of the control panel,
using the trusty reg cleaner I am used to and rebooting the box…
At SE Desk I canceled the install by Windows…
Then inserted the Creative Labs 5.1 disk and followed the prompts to the letter…
At the reboot time I saw the WDM drivers…
All is O.K.
with the Box and more important…
ME…
lol…
I have a lot of Creative Labs St that I’d rather not have…
but HEY… I got the WDM Drivers…
They show up on the Device Manager list and as well, on the n-Track audio list…
[EDIT]
The Graphics Card is a Matrox G-550
…
The next procedure is installing the Lexicon CORE-32 drivers…
It’s a real mess to get them up-and-running…
seven0eleven…
It’s not exactly as it was on the old SE build…
But …
It’s acceptable to me for now…
I hear you loud-and-clear…
Creative Labs/…DIVERS…
Anyway, I’m using the WDM Drivers that are on the original CD…
I think I’m gonna let well enough…
alone…
For Now…
anyway…
I also googled for a 98SE Audio tweak list and followed most of the suggestions…
I had a better Tweak List but who knows where it might be… In that list was a Registry EDIT…
I have a bunch of stuff running in the Start Menu that I’d like to remove…
in DOS
but I don’t know how to get there…
I want to disable the start Group that I’d like to get the SE desk running at better than 95% resource free…
right now it’s somewhere around 89% free… A little here and a little there is all good…
I wonder if it a good idea to fiddle with the SWAP File resources…
? Remember, this is a 1.7 GIG processor…
with 1 gig of RAM…
I’m much more pleased with the machine’s performance than I was at this time this morning…
ALL DAY…
EH…
?
I haven’t played with it yet…
BUT…
I discovered a Windows application in SE that I think converts NTFS
to FAT-32…
ON-the-FLY…
OR am I just imagining this…
??
I thought I saw it in the window’s folder…
somewhere…
Anyway, I’m gonna check the ADD/Remove software list to see what all is reported in there for Microsoft Crap…
I don’t thik there is any installer 3.3 in there…
… CHECKING…
I’ll report back on the P-4 SE Desk…
Bill…
p.s. I forgot to reply… The ATI All-in-Wonder card I use is in that P-111 machine I have… It’s so old it has gray hair growing on it… But… Do you know what?? I think it’s more stable in it’s operation than the Matrox G-550 graphics card… Well… the machine and the way it’s setup… I think it’s a better match… that’s as much as I know…
Hey Bill, glad ya got it up and running, Creative’s drivers don’t install for some reason with the windows installer, I know this from trying to get the E-Mu to work last year, it was a big headache, then I had IRQ issues that drove me nuts! LOL
I know I share IRQ’s… on these machines.
If I ran into an IRQ issue I don’t know if I’d be able to resolve that…
I let The BIOS-and-Operating System play with that…
However, I believe that IRQ sharing doesn’t play well with good audio performance…
I’m so lucky to be around this Board…
Bill…
Bill, I tell ya, if it weren’t for music forums, I’d still be using 8-Track tapes LOL
I think I saw a Driver Cleaner over on the CNET Download Page…
I didn’t download it but I I looked at it for a while…
If I had a Hi-speed connection I’d have it downloaded while I thought about it…
I think my connection is getting better…
At times I’m able to stream some of those music/contest/music files…
There’s some nice creative songs over there…
and…
they are technically, well recorded-mixed-and-mastered… For me… In order of attraction to a song It needs to be Recorded and reproduced to a high level…
Then musically played well…
Then vocals are a last consideration in the order…
That’s what takes me to a song, most of the time…
Bill…
Here’s DCPro
here
It’s the ver before they went commercial
Hi sevenOfeleven:
Thank you for posting that link for me…
I’m getting it now… You have all the Must-Have Utilities…
I’m trying to locate a driver for this USB External Hard drive box I have…
It works just fine in XP…
But a driver for SE…
?
It’s like searching for a needle in a haystack…
I have it (the DC Pro) utility) down and unpacked…
I’m ready to load it into this P-111 XP box… Do you have any quick advice for a noobe CD Pro User… ? in XP and SE… ?
I have that ATI AIW/128 Pro Graphics Card as well I have a LAN Card in these machines…
That’s another issue that I need to resolve with this setup…
After all this config. with these machines, I am considering a SERVER BOX…
to connect to the LAN…
Eventually, I hope to get out of NTFS Formatted drives…
altogether…
I don’t think I need them for mainly doing Audio work…
Maybe, one NTFS Drive for…
whatever… (Unless there;'s a good reason for having more NTFS Drives)
I’ll load up the Server Box with all the extra drives I have laying around…
Maybe, a DVD/CD Drive to Load files into itself…
It’ll be a P-111 ASUS/Intel CUSL2C Main Board
an Intel 800 mhz. Processor… 512 meg of RAM…
I should be able to put SIX Hard Drives along with the Boot Drive and DVD/CD burner into it…
Maybe…
When the LAN works right I can stream 20-30 tracks into the LAN-and-n-Track (Early v5 Builds) setup…
It used to work so nice way back…
when…
I don’t get much beyond a dozen tracks-or-so with the music I usually do here…
along with a bunch of Plugs…
That’s when I was tracking…
Bill…
I’m almost ready to load the Lexicon Drivers onto this '98SE Desk… My only hesitation to getting at this is, I sense the resources of this build might be getting “Hogg’d” by the USB drivers and Registry Entries of USB drivers that I am unable to remember which drivers that should be installed to operate all the normal USB Hardware I have-and-use with the SE Build…
I am considering uninstalling all the USB Drivers in the Device Manager and leaving those installations till later… Or… after the Lexicon CORE Audio equipment is up-and-running… AND… do a registry removal and cleaning of all that USB Drivers-and-Hardware… As well… I may do a Removal of the Creative Labs Hardware and Software utilities and remove/un-instill all the Creative audio Bloat and re-install just the drivers for the LIVE 5.1 Hardware…
Bill…
Hey Bill,
Ran into the same prob with USB - I’ve got USB on the MOBO, USB add-on card,
And I use USB dos-driver to do the ghost stuff. And then I just
got one of these EXT IDE-to-USB boxes so I can take an IDE drive and
plug it into my laptop USB. The kit comes with it’s OWN USB driver
for WIN98.
They should do a better job of telling you what physical
device requires the driver. At least you could google for the right
driver.
BTW - I got excited when I saw this:
Xp set-ups on Win98
Have not got it to work though. (for N) Maybe you can try it if you get a chance.
I got some 'This app has requested Runtime to terminate …'error message.
But I may give it another shot when I get some time.
Hi sevenOfeleven:
Fascinating…
I got a 20 gig drive in a IDE-to-USB box… It works well in the P-111 XP machine… The unit came with a Mini-CD that had a series of drivers on it…
If I remember, the XP Drivers that I installed were the VIA/XP whatever drivers that worked perfectly…
However, on that Mini-Disk are SE Drivers/ 9x
…
BUT, they don’t satisfy the requirements of this SE Build…
I went down the list on a search and still NO-GO…
Every time I boot the SE drive with the USB Hard Drive plugged into a USB Port on the P-4 / SE
machine I get the wizard launching for a driver set…
Anyway, I uninstalled most of the USB driver info on that SE Build…
I spent the afternoon formatting FAT-32 drives…
I still haven’t pulled the string to install the LEXICON Drivers…
yet…
Something is using up resources on that SE Build…
It’s averaging around 88-89% resources
free…
I’d really like to see that figure up/around 95-96%…
I don’t know what’s keeping that number so low…
Overall, the build is behaving pretty well…
BUT…
?
I’ll have a peek at that USB Link…
I’ve got a USB Driver Fix Utility
around somewhere…
Maybe I’ll run it and see what happens…
I hate this inevitable Lexicon Driver Install…
I may as well just pull-the-plug and get it done…
If they don’t install in the correct order there is no uninstall utility…
The manual says they have to be removed the long way…
It lists the order and how it all done…
In the past I’d follow the book like a recipe…
And still manage to screw the install up…
It’s
Install a file…
Reboot…
Install a file and reboot…
AND…AND…
Bill…
bill
It’s not a USB link - it’s a layer to add to Win98 so you
can install XP programs. Makes the install program think your 98 machine
is a XP machine.
AaHh…
A Wrapper…
lol…
If It works here I have n-Track v6.0 beta…
on the SE Desk…
Bill…
I downloaded all the files…
It made me feel like I had a Hi-speed connection…
v3.5 being the latest versions…
I don’t have them unpacked yet…
Is there an installer with those files?
To install the converter…
?
Bill…
[EDIT]
YyEeSs…
there is an installer with the Source .rar file…
I had some questions…
ONE…
What proceedure did you end up using to get the response you got from SE…
?
AND…
What .NET Framework did you have installed when you loaded the XP Applications you tried to launch…
Details like that might be a help in attempting to load applications here on this end…
[EDIT 2]
I’m gonna pull the string on that v3.5 .rar source file… There’s a read me file… I think I’ll see what’s in there… first…
Back Again:
There’s an install/remove document up on that Home Page… It appears that It’s a DOS install program… The doc. tells step-by-step key-strokes to load the application…
Bill…
bill,
that’s for the UN-install.
And actually I discovered if you double-click on the KernelEx.exe (after you have installed) it will offer
to un-install for you - and it does
basically you unzip the files to a folder
get this file first
Unicows.exe
and install it (on 98SE) INSTALL FOLDER IS WINDOWS/SYSTEM
2. Run KernelEx.exe
3. Re-boot
4. If all went well You’ll see an open DOS window that just says the install went OK and to hit ENTER
5. Now the KEXVER.ini - Here’s what I ended up with. The program adds
it’s own stuff - I’m just showing you what I added.
This .ini should be in the WINDOWS directory.
the ini
[Global]
I don’t think they use this (I forgot you’ll have to look, but I left it alone)
[PerApp]
ntrck_swBeta.exe=winxp
(Add this)
[Override]
‘There will be some stuff in here - I just left it as is’
[Skip Modules]
‘There will be some stuff in here - I just left it as is’
Thank you … sevenOfeleven:
I took a nap after supper… I don’t know where the evening went… When I woke up it was after my bedtime… I don’t know but I think I’m gonna be all slept out… I hate it when I get my clock turned around… Maybe, I fire up that P-4 and look around…
I need to get some FAT-32 drives going in the P-111 XP Machine so I can get a LAN going between the P-4 SE Desk and the P-111 XP Desk… Then I’ll be able to LAN utilities and applications between the two machines…
Computers haven’t completely screwed me around yet… but I’m working on it…
Bill…
