Version 6 beta release date

Just noticed that some info on v6.0 is in the version history. Seems like quite a lot of improvements/new features will be implememted. Well, have to study the list in more details… And wait for the beta on 4. July.

Flavio has been BUSY! “The waaaaiiiitttingg is the hardest part…” (with props to Mr. Petty) :p

What’s new in Ver 6.0

Hi Gents:

It’s an impressive looking list of new features…
I am looking at the meter update…
AND…
The choice of more that one Editor in the list
without closing n-Track
AND/and…
>>
Not using .NET

There’s a long list of “EDITING” features…
that just needs to be tried to get used to…

I wonder if it’ll need to un-install v5 ????

Bob Katz K-System, with presets for K-12, K-14 and K-20) - thats it i’m hooked, everything else is a bonus -

Dr J

Hi Doc. J:

I don’t know much about the Bob Katz K-System of Metering…
I have the Mastering Audio Book he published a few years back… Maybe, he wrote about it in his book…
I should get it out and “Bone Up” on what’s in there…
again…

This is the meter that I’d like to see someone “Digitize” into something that would work within Software…

Dorrough Analogue Meters

Of I knew how to program and write code I’d spend the rest of my days and produce a Software Version of this meter concept…

It’s alright to realize that you have Level OVERS…
BUT when the day is over…
You have to know the exact amount of Level OVERS you have in your mix…
OVERS are referenced to some other level…
You have to be able to Measure-and-See them
as well as Hear them…
to place them in relative context…

The best way I can describe the Dorrough Meter concept is…
It’s a Double Logrithmic Measuring Meter…
for Volume Units…

BOY…
I’m glad I squeezed that outta that bone in my head…
:p

I feel better, already…

Bill…

Here’s a very good explaination of the Katz method of metering:

Katz Metering

Bob Katz is my hero. He is a definite advocate of restoring dynamics back to the music. Stop the loudness wars.

K metering is a great addition to n-Track. ‘R’ has had it for some time now. Probably quite a few others?

Good move Flavio!

I have read the Version 6.0 list of features, improvements and bug fixes, and the “record a mono track at 24 bits with ASIO on an Emu soundcard” seems not to be addressed… :disagree:

I think I’ll stick with Cubase Studio 4 for now, thank you.

regards, Nils

Hi Nils,

You have an 1820M right? Let me check it out this evening but I am pretty sure I have done 24 bit mono on my EMU system before. Let me check it though because that time MAY have been V4.? rather than V5. Did this problem show up with V5?

I tracked 16 channels at 24/44.1 with the EMU and V4 once upon a time, but I don’t know about V5… I’ll get back to you on this…

D

Don’t need .net anymore! :agree: :agree: :agree: :agree: :agree:

Nils,

As I said I would, I tried it out. n-Track V5 (latest build) records 24/44.1 mono just fine. I am stumped as to what the problem could be on your system?

I have an 1820M, latest drivers/PatchMix from EMU… n is setup to record “Stereo > Two Mono Tracks” and I armed one side of Dock 3 to record and recorded about 45 seconds. It worked fine. I don’t know what to say?

Yes... many, many "thumbs-up". The .NET run-time is MS "bloatware" at it's 'finest'. Good riddance...

Why do we have to have .NET to use the navigator? Other DAWS I have and use have this feature and none of them use the .NET run-time library? Flavio?

D

D, what drivers you running 1.82? 2.01? Please try asio with 24/48 and see what you get.

24/48 mono works too Yaz. I dunno what’s up? I have the 1820M. Is the software the same driver/PMix for the 0404? You have the 0404 right?

D

I use the Emu 1820 (i.e. not m), and use the 2.00 drivers (the update to 2.01 seems only to be of importance to Vista users, and I use XP (SP3)), ASIO, and n-Track V. 5 (last build). Any attempt to record a mono track in 24 bit - even several simultaneous mono tracks (as ASIO channels come in pairs) - results in corrupted wave files comprising nothing but unuseable, distorted garbage. Besides, the resulting wave files are unreadable by any other application, i.e. they are garbled during recording. Imported 24 bit mono wave files recorded in any other application sounds perfect in n-Track.

I tried the same in Samplitude 8 SE; perfect result.

I tried the same in Cubase LE; perfect result.

I tried the same in Reaper; perfect result.

I tried the same in Wavelab LE; perfect result.

I tried something similar in Cool Edit 2000 (no ASIO, BTW); perfect result.

The conclusion is: No matter if this is a hardware related bug or not, this is related to n-Track and not any other app!

Besides, I have had a lot of other (minor) bugs to battle in n-Track, including a delay when using an Aux channel while mixing. I have tried everything I could think of (plus some suggestions from this board, thank you guys!) but so far have not been able to eliminate this.

For these reasons, I have made my decision not to upgrade n-Track when the next version turns out. Besides that, Cubase has many other things to offer at a competitive (although not comparable) price tag, including on-the-fly wave editing, freezeable on-line processing of wave file chunks (gating, silencing, normalizing, fade-in, fade-out, filtering, cutting, copying, pasting etc. etc.), a flexible routing scheme, a small ressource footprint leaving room for a lot of VSTi’s and VST’s (many of which do not work in n-Track at all), and a prepared template for my BFC2000 fader controller, giving me immediate access to the settings of 32 audio channels and 16 midi channels in a flexible hardware unit.

Don’t get me wrong: n-Track is a good starting point for anyone on a budget (including myself), but for the more sophisticated users it is definitely lacking and is probably getting a bit long in the tooth…

regards, Nils

Same as Nils here D, works fine in
Reaper
Cubase LE

no record asio 24bt in nTrack, waves are blocks of distorted mess, mono or stereo.
Used 2.0 and 2.1 drivers no change.

Hi n-Track Users:

Somehow…
We got to get Nils K and Yaz to get their Hardware Up-and-Running…
Anyway, you can download the Beta Version and see if your hardware will run in v6 Beta…

These guys are First-Rate Contributors to this Board…
They carry loads of Tracking-and-Editing experience with them… AND…
we can sure benefit from them in some ways…

There’s gotta be some kind of driver installation corruption or something that’s causing their issues…

Who Knows…
????

Bill…

p.s.
It’s like Red Green, of the Red Green Show says…

“Remember…
We’re all in this together…
AND…
I’m pull’in for yea…”
The CBC Network carries the show…
I think the PBS Network carries it in the USA…

OK, set a simple patchmix, L/R stereo out, Wave 1/2, Asio 1/2. Inserted meters on all strips to monitor distortion.
In nTrack, E-Mu asio selected for record and playback. 24/48k settings, Patchmix set at 48k, recorded stereo and stereo 2 mono tracks, same results in both, recorded waves look fine in ntrack, playback is total distortion, transferred waves to Reaper and they are solid blocks of distortion.

Went back to nTrack, switched to 16bt/48k, recorded just fine.

Bummed out over this!

Yaz the low teck bummed out redneck! :disagree:
