I got a new PC last week that came with Windows Vista…
The way I had n-Track set up before was that I would run the Tape Out from a small mixing board to the line-in on the computer, and then run the line-out on the computer back to the Tape In on the board. Everything worked great… I could hear both what I was currently recording as well as the tracks I had recorded before.
Vista has changed the volume control/mixer up a bunch and it’s all program based now, and while I can listen to things I have already recorded, and I can record new tracks just as I did before, I can’t hear what I am currently recording… like the Line-In is muted in playback, but selected as the recording source.
Anyone know what I need to do to get this working?
Use the LIVE button. If you’re not using ASIO drivers there’ll be some latency but you can try using ASIO4ALL for your onboard card.
What is the Live button, and where do I find it?
Okay, I found the Live button, and I did have latency issues.
I installed ASIO4ALL, and I can record, but I can’t play back or hear while I play.
I ran the settings app for ASIO4ALL and it shows this:
http://www.lookeredup.com/temp/asio4all.gif
I’m guessing this means I’m screwed and my computer doesn’t support ASIO for playback?
Is there any way to get the old XP style volume control/mixer in Vista?
Did you try inside of Ntrack?
Preferences>Record Settings>WAVE devices
There should be a box that has a list of devices for wave input devices and output devices.
Wave output devices: Wave Input devices:
ASIO4all ASIO4all
DS- DirectSound (SB live) DS-Primary Sound Capture Driver [DF80]
1-SB Live! Wave out [DF80] 1-SB Live! Wave out [DF80]
There is also a button that says “full duplex test” set the desired devices and then press it.
It is possible in theory that installing Vista has set these devices itself to default settings when you installed Ntrack or when the soundcard was installed, where as you want them set to the devices you will need to do what you are trying to accomplish.
You may have to reload the Asio drivers as well, I have heard tail of ones that did not load properly on the first try for one reason or another.
It would be helpful to know what soundcard you are using since there are similar errs with similar cards, Ntrack and Vista that may have common solutions.
I don’t recomend live, have not heard a lot of great things about it.
Also the picture you posted said SPDIF/out was available, you could monitor via that provided you have means to do so.( a mixer or interface with SPDIF in you could use to monitor playback through.
IT sounded like you went from one problem to another, first not being able to hear what you were recording but being able to hear what you played, then when you updated to ASIO the problem reversed to not being able to hear what played but then being able to hear what you recorded…
That is why I suggest accessing these devices via Ntracks WAVE devices panel, since you may be able to set the “playback” to use the device that worked for it previously, and the “record” to use the device that it is currently using (since it IS working!)
Change the playback device run FULL DUPLEX…?

I’m guessing you have a newer version of ntrack (mine is 3.3), because you are describing some things that I don’t have.
I do have that box with output and input devices, and this is where I am selecting the ASIO4all.
I don’t see a ‘full duplex test’ button.
When you say you ‘don’t recommend live’, what do you mean?
Unfortunately I don’t have a way to use the SPDIF out.
I did go from one problem to another, sort of… the first was that I couldn’t hear what I was recording, but could hear what I recorded, and then based on this thread was able to hear what I was recording, but with significant (1 sec) lag between playing a note and hearing it.
The second problem is that I can’t hear what I’m recording OR what I’ve recorded.
It will not let me set the old device as the playback source and the record source as ASIO4ALL, as it says that if one thing is ASIO, both need to be ASIO.
hrm. I could always put my old Santa Cruz in this machine and see if I can get it working…
I almost had something working… maybe… but it said I needed 24 bit. So I went ahead and bought the upgrade to the latest ntrack… probably something I needed to do anyway… waiting on a code, then I’ll see if it helps.
Yes that may have been it, if you were using 16 bit in Xp and now Vista and ASIO requires 24 bit (which version3.3 may not accommodate)??
BTW I’m still on 2.3 so it’s a matter of older version that had that preference option:
File>Preferences>Record Settings>WAVE devices
The word “file” is at the top left of my Ntrack box…down from there “preference’s” inside that “Record ssettings” inside that “wave devices”.
Sorry for causing the confusion.
I do not own Vista but I have been hear a while and have read a few reports about people and their troubles over the years when upgrading operating systems…Vista being the latest.
Hopefully someone who is more familiar with Vista and the newer versions of Ntrack will respond for ya, but I have a feeling all will be well when you get the updated codes for the newer version.
On that note, I would also recomend you use a slightly older build of the newer version of Ntrack than the the current one since this is an evolving progyy and the older versions are a bit more stable sometimes while the newer ones we are still working the quirks out of, one system at a time! lol
I suggest asking a question (posting a new thread) about which version or last build was the most reliable and stable with Vista and use that one…(at least until the newest build is concrete)
You may have to uninstall the one you probaly just downloaded and find the link to last stable build and install that and then insert the codes flav gives.

Man, this is so frustrating.
The problem I had was a problem with this soundcard and vista, and I finally found a half-assed solution that allows me to hear what I’m recording as well as what is playing back if I use the microphone input on the soundcard as the recording input… I don’t really hear a difference between it and the line in, so this should work…
However, I am now having latency problems when recording… I can’t record two tracks and have the line up, or have the first track I record line up with the metronome… I have to slide things around to get them to where they should start… obviously this just isn’t an acceptable solution.
So frustrating that I bought all this PC and it won’t do the super, super simple recording stuff I need it to do, and which my previous two PCs did without a hitch.
Is there a better soundcard I can just buy that will alleviate these issues? I have a buddy who is trying to unload an E-MU… something or other… 0404 or 1212? Will those work well with vista and ntrack?
