August 6th PDB - you decide

Now if you had read this PDB on August 6th, 2001:

Clandestine, foreign government, and media reports indicate Bin Ladin since 1997 has wanted to conduct terrorist attacks in the US. Bin Ladin implied in US television interviews in 1997 and 1998 that his followers would follow the example of World Trade Center bomber Ramzi Yousef and “bring the fighting to America.”

After US missile strikes on his base in Afghanistan in 1998, Bin Ladin told followers he wanted to retaliate in Washington, according to a …(redacted portion) … service.

An Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ) operative told an … (redacted portion) … service at the same time that Bin Ladin was planning to exploit the operative’s access to the US to mount a terrorist strike.

The millennium plotting in Canada in 1999 may have been part of Bin Ladin’s first serious attempt to implement a terrorist strike in the US. Convicted plotter Ahmed Ressam has told the FBI that he conceived the idea to attack Los Angeles International Airport himself, but that Bin Ladin lieutenant Abu Zubaydah encouraged him and helped facilitate the operation. Ressam also said that in 1998 Abu Zubaydah was planning his own US attack.

Ressam says Bin Ladin was aware of the Los Angeles operation.

Although Bin Ladin has not succeeded, his attacks against the US Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 demonstrate that he prepares operations years in advance and is not deterred by setbacks. Bin Ladin associates surveilled our Embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam as early as 1993, and some members of the Nairobi cell planning the bombings were arrested and deported in 1997.

Al-Qa’ida members – including some who are US citizens --have resided in or traveled to the US for years, and the group apparently maintains a support structure that could aid attacks. Two al-Qa’ida members found guilty in the conspiracy to bomb our Embassies in East Africa were US citizens, and a senior EIJ member lived in California in the mid-1990s.

A clandestine source said in 1998 that a Bin Ladin cell in New York was recruiting Muslim-American youth for attacks.

We have not been able to corroborate some of the more sensational threat reporting, such as that from a … (redacted portion) … service in 1998 saying that Bin Ladin wanted to hijack a US aircraft to gain the release of “Blind Shaykh” ’Umar ’Abd al-Rahman and other US-held extremists.

Nevertheless, FBI information since that time indicates patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for hijackings or other types of attacks, including recent surveillance of federal buildings in New York.

The FBI is conducting approximately 70 full field investigations throughout the US that it considers Bin Ladin-related. CIA and the FBI are investigating a call to our Embassy in the UAE in May saying that a group of Bin Ladin supporters was in the US planning attacks with explosives.

and then you were told that a 2nd airplane had just hit the trade tower (1 month after the PDB):

What would you had done?

still dead

What would you had done?

Read a book about a pet goat. What other options are there?

That’s funny!! Well at least read it for 5 - 7 minutes anyways.

You know here I present a real document that we know isn’t a forgery. It outlines a real threat. We hope that Bush actually read it.

And yet, no-one is concerned or outraged with Bush for having this information & not really doing anything about it!!! No-one is outraged that Bush didn’t shake up the intel community then - order the FBI & CIA to report anything they had on terrorists to the terror czar & the National Security director. No-one is outraged that Bush, in 3 years, has done nothing to fix the intel community & might not have if it weren’t for the 9/11 commission whose creation he actually opposed. Where’s the outrage???

If a Democrat had (not) done these things, he would have been impeached for God’s sake.

I see the patterns & the symptoms alright.

Let's see, how 'bout ...

... sat for 40 minutes with Barbara Boxer and Harry Reid unable to think ?

according to CNN transcript:

'Nobody Could Think' ( For 40 minutes )

John Kerry: "I was in the Capitol. We'd just had a meeting - we'd just come into a leadership meeting in Tom Daschle's office, looking out at the Capitol. And as I came in, Barbara Boxer and Harry Reid were standing there, and we watched the second plane come in to the building. And we shortly thereafter sat down at the table and then we just realized nobody could think ( FOR 40 MINUTES ), and then boom, right behind us, we saw the cloud of explosion at the Pentagon. And then word came from the White House, they were evacuating, and we were to evacuate, and so we immediately began the evacuation."

It just doesn't get better than this !!!

... you make it too easy Cosmo

After the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, which killed six and injured 1,000, President Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.

After the 1995 bombing in Saudi Arabia, which killed five U.S. military personnel, Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.

After the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia, which killed 19 and injured 200 U.S. military personnel, Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.

After the 1998 bombing of U.S. embassies in Africa, which killed 224 and injured 5,000, Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.

After the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 and injured 39 U.S. sailors, Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.

Perhaps if Clinton had kept his promises, over 3,000 people would be alive today.

In 1996 the government of Sudan had Osama bin Laden in their custody and offered to hand him over to the United States. Bill Clinton and his liberal cohorts elected not to take the Sudanese up on their offer. Why? Because they couldn't figure out a legal means of trying him!

But Clinton sure knew how to argue the meaning of is!

Clinton Happens !

Thanks. That explains very well why we went into Iraq looking for bin Laden.

Phoo - I’m assuming that are being sarcastic here.

It is NOT Clinton’s fault that 9/11 happened so what you are saying is just plain lies. It’s true he could have done more, but it’s really Bush’s fault because Bush didn’t do enough to counter-act the threat & there’s the PDB (which Clinton didn’t get to read).

Oh yeah.

Then you made an excellent POINT!!! One which Bush et al have been trying to change their story on every since no WMDs were found, no solid link from Iraq to 9/11 and no solid link from Iraq to Al Quada.

Again - why is that the America people buy this blooney? If a Democrat had done it - impeachment time again.

OK. I was going stay outta this one but…

Let’s pretend Al Gore (or the Taco Bell pooch for that matter…) had been President on Aug 6…what would he have done? Well, he mighta called up his advisors and chatted for a while. Heck they may have even formulated a plan of action. By the time the beauracratic sludge was cleared away though, the Towers would still be down, approx 3,000 people would still be dead.

I would not blame Bush or Clinton or Reagan or Carter or Ford etc… With our system of government, it would be foolish to do that.

Because it's what they are fed. Are you "inside the loop" of the FBI, CIA, NSC et. al? They only tell us a small percentage of what they know. Prevents mass panic and hysteria.

There is probably TONS of crap we DON'T want to know.

PS What the heck is "blooney" anyway??

This is valid to discuss. Al Gore or anyone could have screwed this up just as well as anyone.

So let's stick with Bush. Here's what W. could/should have done - he should have immediately gotten a meeting with the CIA & the FBI. He should have asked for a thorough accounting of ANY information that both groups had on terrorists in the country. We know that the FBI had information - Ken Williams had info. & Zoukowi (sp?) was already in custody. He should have "shook the trees" as R. Clarke put it.

This PDB should have been taken seriously! It's my understanding that Bush didn't have a serious meeting on terrorism until 9/10 or something like that.

9/11 still might have happened but it might not have.

The 9/11 commission was very careful to not place blame on any President/admin but if they had done that accurately, Bush would have been to blame because it happened on his watch. Clinton would have been also been to blame but it wasn't Clinton's watch.

But aside from 9/11, it's not acceptable to me that Bush did basically nothing in 3 years to reform our intel. Why doesn't that bother anyone???

He should have "shook the trees" as R. Clarke put it.

WE have needed to "shake the trees" for decades here in the US. We have become reactionary not preventative. In my line of work, reacting to a problem is too late. Preventing it in the first place is what I get paid to do. Predictive and preventative measures are usually cheap compared to the results of reacting after the fact.

WE just waggle along reacting to whatever the rest of the world throws at us.
