best mic's for the money?

hey, im a regular home music creator, but always have problems recording vocals effectively. this could be due to using a cheap computer mic, so im looking to invest in a better product. preferably around 50 quid, but any suggestions will be appreciated.
thanks a lot.

Yubious,

Don’t overlook the ubiquitus Shure SM57 and SM58. The SM58, ball-shaped mic is a little better for vocals. You can shop around and find them for well under US$100 (is that 50 quid?)

Nice mics and virtually indistructable.

My 02 pence.

Don

The other side of the coin from Don’s comment is to go with a Large Diaphram Condenser. You can pick up an entry level MXL, Studio Projects, or Rode pretty cheap on ebay and this will give you an idea what this type of mic will do.

The thing about an LDC is that it will pick up more of the room sound than a dynamic. This can be good or bad, depending on your room. If you’re singing in a small, reflective room it can sound bad. If your room is decent the LDC will give you more of the characteristic open sound you hear on commercial records.

These low cost LDCs are typically pretty tizzy in the highs so depending on what mixer or preamp you’re running through you might have to eq somewhat to get a smoother sound. You will also need phantom power.

It’s about that Don but prices are such in the UK that often we pay more in £££ than you pay in $$$ in the US. You can pick up an SM58 for about £70-£80 though.

I agree with 8th’s comments on LDCs. The AT 2020 is in the same price range as an SM58 and may be more versatile in the studio situation.

And then there’s the Rode NT1a

Don’t forget that you need phantom power for most LDCs.

You know, the rode nt3 has a very interesting sound - 3/4 inch condensor - and it really sounds 1/2 way between the nt5 and a LD condensor. They are cheap on Ebay (at least they were last I looked) because no one really knows what it is for.

Re: dynamics - how about an audix i5?

I love MXL 990 and 991 condensors. And also Audio Technica MB000L dynamics, but those are discontinued

hey, thanks for all the replies. decieded to go for the shure sm58 cos it seems more suited for what i want it for. found one on ebay for £41, but doesnt look like it has the mic cable with it, anyone know a place i can get one for a decent price?

Make one.. at least in NZ it works out a good $5 - $10 cheaper then buying a premade one.
