Do you "catch a buzz" on gigs?

What is your poison?

Take what I said with a grain of salt. He conveyed this to me at a gig when we were both less than sober, so I am sure what I said is grossly over simplifed and half sideways. :)

When I was doing “professional sideman” work, I would never drink until it was the last set of the night/gig. I’ve worked with too many guys that would be drunk through the entire gig to the detriment of the bands sound. This was a rule when I was the leader of the group. But I do know many guys that drink or smoke weed through the entire gig and was curious as to what others do in this situation.

All of my gigs are at Churches, or Festivals, fundrasers of a Christian nature. So drinking is not really proper for me, but I will tell you the truth.
Even at these events I have seen band members(not my band) smoke before and after.
It’s not for me to judge them,.; Pesonally it doens’t stay in line with my own belief about the temple of God. But, ther was a time in my life that I made the Bible, conform to my life.

I have been known to get drunk, on the Holy spirit during and after a gig.

Don’t know if that counts! :D

Peace abides,

jerm

I’ve never touched drugs at all but I do like a beer. If it’s a paid gig I consider it work. I’m sober at work.

Eyup!

I didn’t understand the language the poll was written in (showing my age I guess :D ) so I didn’t vote.
I’ve never indulged in drugs and my musical skill is far too minimal to be further degraded by the use of alcohol.

Wow Steve, how old are you? I'm pushing 50... ???

Anyway, a "gig" is a musical job for which you get paid. "Catching a buzz" has refered in the past to smoking pot, but more recently refers to any slight alcohol or pot use. The term "partying" is a synonym for "catching a buzz".

Can't say there's been mirrors at these gigs...

But I can say it feels GREAT!

Actually, my poll has seen plenty of sex.. (insert rim shot here)

I left sex out of the poll cause I don't see it as being detrimental to my playing, unless I am trying to do both at the same time. In which case I will set down the guitar and get to the business at... er... hand. :p

Sounds like a chore, or job the way your describing it. At least that, where I do my business.

I always thought of it as a mutial exchange of affection. :D

Heh, that’s why I alwys liked playing with the old men at the Italian church. The coffee was always a bit, shall we say, warmed up and the home made wine made its rounds too. :;):

Any who, I hate playing drunk. I just won’t do it. Usually what happns is the gig is done and maybe I will have a drink before packing up. (Which was the situation from the other night I referenced… plus Kristi was out with me so I had a driver.) I just don’t think it is professional to be drunk on stage. Plus, lucky me, smoking is not allowed in any public building in Ohio, so no smoking in any bars… yay for me! I don’t smoke and hate coming home with smoke in my clothes and hair.

EDIT: Oh, you were referring to THAT kind of smoking.Boy am I naive. Err, I have never smoked a cigarette or a joint or anything else for that matter. Drugs were never anything I was even curious about.

And you call yourself a musician… lol :p

No, my mother had me fairly terrified of even considering it. Mix being ctholic with being an ER nurse… so not only do you have the guilt of how you oul dnot only kill yourself… but her… she also had diagrams and pictures.

You have a good mom Bubba. Some kids are not so lucky…

D – terrifies his kids about drugs and booze etc…

I almost always have a drink when I play. 1 beer per set. Any more and I notice it affects my playing, especially towards the end of the night. It probably affects my playing anyway, but not enough to be a problem. It’s a great help with performance anxiety, at least for me. I guess you could call that ‘catching a buzz’, but it’s certainly not a debilitating buzz. Some people (including the wife) have called it a crutch.

Also, I rarely smoke before or during a gig. Occasionally I’ll partake before the last set, but that’s very rare for me. I’m such a lightweight smoker anyway. Just about everybody I play with is buzzed in one way or another, but not enough to be a problem. In fact one drummer I play with is always buzzed on all manner of things, and he is rock solid on the stool. Go figure.

Frankly I couldn’t imagine playing in a bar and not having a couple of beers. That’s why amps are flat on top, right ?
