As you say, Levi. Source eq is the key. As mentioned in an earlyer thread, though, once a track has been built for cans or plugs, it sounds crap in the open.
Bubba's settings worked best.
Glad to take credit, wish I knew what settings those were.

setting the laptop in the sun for a while, it works!

I believe you said to drop anything sought of 50hz , can give a little rise around 100hz, give rise again between 1k and 10, dropping anything north of 10k.
I appreciate that kind of help

I would experiment with a setting like this and wonder, but when you and some others here suggest it, than I trust it to be acceptable.
I suppose if the original track is eq'ed perfect from the amp, no eqing is necessary?
If the bass isn’t cutting through, I boost slightly at 100hz and pull up a big peak at 1-3k. It will sound like **** on its own, but’ll work in the mix.

That does sound like me.....

However, I wouldn't necessarily bother with an amp at all. A DI track often works peachy. Just compress the snot out of it. And Spooner is right on. The finger pluck is at the 2-3k range. Give that a bump for clarity. Everything above 10k, no need to cut that off... it is like cutting the the crust off a pita... ain't no crust to cut off... so why bother?
Be careful boosting at 100hz. The kick can live there and you run the risk of boominess. I usually mold the bass around the kick. So yeah, roll off the low end... let the upper harmonics from say 140hz up do all the work.
Well the current mix sounds pretty good thx to y’all, and my other mix’s? Ha! A little boomie here and there!
Darn.
Better to know then not know.
With blues on mainstream radio (for blues) the modern stuff comes across pretty big on the bottom.
I don’t mean drop down big or b string big, I mean just big.
Almost boomie, definitely full.
if you mic a bass amp, even if you set the amp up perfectly, you have to compensate color/phase/eq that the mic can distort, and you may be only able to go so far. straight in tends to give you more flexability.
Yup, even if I hav a bass player who insists on micing his amp, I always take a DI track just in case… and then generally end up using it. Byt the way, BIG is your friend:

Hey Bubba? Does that run on non SSE2 machines? I tried some of Acmes guitar amps and they won’t run on my clunker AthlonXP… I hope to upgrade the DAW PC before the year is out but I have a project I have to get finished before mid September and I need a good bass amp plug… I got roped into doing some original music for a fund raiser/5k race thing. I need to finish up three maybe four tunes for this thing.
I have a decent bass but no bass amp and am looking for some tonal options.
D
I have no idea. I sort of remember there being a discussion on this over at the R forum… but I never paid attention as it works fine on my machines. (A P4 and Core 2 Quad) About the only other bass plug I would recommend is the Samplitube SVX. It is great. Past that, I bet you can get a bass POD on ebay for next to nothing.
I’ll check 'em out anyway. I always used my old Pandora for bass in the past. Now that the boy is back home and assuming he hasn’t lost it roll-eyes I may just use it again. It sounded pretty good for bass. One of the tunes is gonna use a synth patch from Proteus.
Thanks,
D
Thx for the input JDET!
Nice Bubba! I’ll have to give BIG a test drive, big Thx!
Bubba I would like you to do me a favor when you get a chance, if you would pls.
Go to www.myspace.com/levistringer
Scan through the songs in the myspace player or pop out player. Using “I Got My Eye On You” as the
prototype compare the mix of the other songs. Figure out how much you would charge me to master the other songs to give a similar result (if you also think IGMEOY is worthy of being a prototype). Don’t worry, my first mix’s aren’t monsters like you saw before. My basic mixdown has headroom and looks normal. You can email me your thoughts at levistringer@myspace.com
