for small speekers
I’ve found some interesting ideas for making the bass shine in your mix, cutting through on small speakers.
If you’ve got some I would love to hear them.
Here is the latest idea I’m trying.
By adjusting this range (upper bass/lower mids) during tracking at the source (EQ the bass, amp, and mic itself), yet leaving it alone at mix gets the tone I’m after, but still leaves enough midrange info to translate on smaller speakers. If more is needed, I’ll sometimes dup the bass track, lowpass somewhere from 100 to 1000hz (wherever it needs to be), and run it through some serious distortion, and then blend that back in under the original. Not enough to really hear it, but enough to add some of that harmonic info needed for the crappy playback systems.
to hell with small speakers. that’s my input.
your hybrid bass idea is what several bassists are doing live these days (including geddy lee), where they will have a stereo bass (1 out for neck pickup, 1 out for the bridge), send the neck output to one amp rig for the basic clean, low sound, and the bridge output to a separate rig set up for mid’s and distorion, and blend the two for the live sound. i would do that too, if i were that important.

Just tried it and it works.
It made my song through these tiny speakers sound more interesting and busy.
It's not perfected but that's the way to do it.
On my large speakers for bass; still had the bottom end track,
then on the cloned thinned track I used ntracks freeamp and added drive. Blended them to get a sweet sound!
and tested it on the laptop.
That will do it!
Have to perfect the settings and remix and now I'll have to rewire my bass and get more serious about my bass playin

Also for sub tones.
I heard about a guy loosing the g string and adding
b on a 4 string bass.
Anyone try that? Sounds doable
You need to get SoundClick to sub categorize their plays. Earphones only, laptops only, …
Why are you so into hearing bass on a laptop?

i've actually done the opposite, when i had five-string basses i didn't like the playing/outcome of the low b-string, so i removed it and replaced it with the high-C of a six string instead. it will work, but you have to have an amp/setup that can reproduce the low-freq signals of the b-string. personally, i just use a standard 4-string (fretless, now!) with the low string slack-tuned to D, cuz that's as low as i care/need to go.

I think the ones who buy most music are young and using devices to shop with, while taking breaks from work "and or" using the devices to find personal space on trains, planes, and subways, etc. Just tryin to give myself every chance to make a buck pop's.

Yea that's plenty of low end effect. Do you leave it that way or are you changing back from time to time? I will definitely give that a go!!!
i used to change it, but i just play low d string standard now and leave it that way. even the wife is learning bass with it tuned that way, which is probably doing her a disservice.
A nice sharp peak on the mid/upper-mid range EQ helps to give a “sharp” sound to the bass, it emphasises the transients of the initial “pick”, and stops it sounding like farting in the bath. You have to hunt around for the right frequency, the right boost, and the right Q though, it depends on lots of stuff, but I usually find it somewhere between 1kHz and 3 kHz. (But try lower and higher. Use at least 10dB boost, a narrow Q, and just hunt around for it, then adjust your settings for the best sound).

Well maybe it will always seem normal to her.
Ever play 6 sting and forget to tune you drops bank up and find yourself in the midsts of a marathon jam?
I have lol and have a recording of it. That's cool that you both play bass

Thx EZ! Pushin the highs has shown me that my bass has a wiring problem. When I clean that up I'll retake and give it a try! Wait, think I'll try this first maybe the buzz won't be noticeable.
Here’s an idea… have your stuff professionally mastered.
is that a “hint”?

Thx Bubba, you always have great ideas!

It's funny how time changes us and situations dictate what we can't do. Last yr I should have this yr I can't afford it. Maybe in a month or two.
interesting. I write stuff for headphones/plugs

How do your plugs compare to the phones, can you hear bass guitar in the plugs?
I rerecorded the bass track with the toggle on the treble side and used a flat pick.
Half the problem is where the pick’ups sit on this bass. Also moved out from the amp about 6’, that stopped most of the buzzing.
Using a flat pick avoided the pickup screws and gave the sound more punch.
Bubba’s settings worked best.
I’m glad that’s done!
Was able to learn and apply new guitar playing thingies by again being patient!
