trying to add os to a drive
if anyone could save me alot of reading it would be great.
what i wannna do is put a windows 98 system, which i have a disk for,on a drive that i wiped clean.i have 2 computers ,so i thought by hooking up wiped drive in the already running computer that this would be easy, but dosent seem that way now.
if any could steer me to somthin thanx in advance!
Simply running the Win98 setup from within the booted into OS should allow you to select where to install Win98, as a dual boot. Is that what you are trying to do? (I haven’t done this in years with Win98 - I could be wrong).
What errors are you getting?
yeah phoo, trying to put 98 on a drive that i took from one pc an installed into another pc
i have a 98 disc that has windows only on it,an figured i could wipe it clean in the good machine, install the 98 dsc an then slip it back into its original pc
i can boot up from that disk,i just wanna make sure i install it to the right drive, you think it will give me a choice hmmmmm??
had a friend come over with a disc that has xp pro on it and he got that on the drive, but when it came to register it said the product key had been used too many times .so its back to 98 i guess,i have that 98 disc, will they be askin to register that one too?man,am i redneck or what?!
If you have had XP on that drive a lot of times when you try to format back to 98, XP leaves a partition that is hard to remove.Western Digital has a free download formatting tool that will set most drives up for 98 or XP.I think the name of it was Data Lifeguard 11.0 Dos.Take your drive and make it the master and connect it to the end connector on the ribbon and start your machine with the W.D. disk in the drive and follow instructions.PS You don’t have to activate 98 all you need is the code. You have to call in if you have acctivated XP more than two times.
i called into microsoft an now i have it activated,so i have xp pro on that drive now,so i tried slippin it back into its old machine and i got a ln sumthin or another missing? ill try again an get the correct error if it do,any ideas what that mite be?
If you activated that drive on one PC and then moved it to another PC, it may not worked. The activation is based on a numeric code created by the computer. Each computer will create a different code.
If it does work, I would be surprised.

NO,NO,NO,NO,NO,NO!!!!!!
Dave, are you saying the 40 gig drive I saved all my stuff on-----All my music----will not go into another machine??? Are you saying I lost ALL my music? I had a spare HD with xp home OS, put everything on it, and took it to the USA for safekeeping. It is sitting in Montana waiting for my eventual return.
Ohmygod.

That is not what I am saying exactly.
If you installed Windows on a drive, and then activated windows from that computer. If you move the drive to another computer and boot from it, it will require reactivation. It will not run on a different computer.
Your files are all still there. If you install the drive as a NON-BOOT drive on another computer, you can access all of the files. You just cannot use the drive as a Boot drive.

Whew! Best news I’ve had all day!
Thanks for that, Dave.
