I just bought a pair of Shure SCL2-K Black Earphones. I’ll let ya’ll know what I think next week. not a bad buy from what I’ve looked around on the net. $70.90 with shipping included.
Please let me know how they work. I am going to HAVE to get something with more low-end than what these crappy 25 buck jobbies can do… Can’t lock in with the kick drum… bass guitar sounds like it’s underwater… phooey. I know there’s something better out there I can afford.
Been test driving my SCL2’s all day - man they are schweet. Hannah Montana’s bass player rocks!
I spent the whole day just listening to music. I haven’t done that for a long time. What a great day.
I will give them the live test Thursday at rehearsal. So far I have to say they out perform any earphones I’ve ever used and most of the headphones I currently use in my home studio.
I was really surprised by the low end response combined with the crisp highs.
Not too keen on the “upside down” fit yet but that will come.
I’ll let ya know Thursday night how they perform as in ear monitors.

So how are they, good bass response?? Just wondering what you think of them.
Hey Congrats on your Shure earphones, I have been real happy with some BOSE over-the-ear types.

Guilty pleasures, I was gonna start a thread where I dared everyone to reveal their guilty pleasures, Ok well I’ll go first, I’m supposed to hate it, but I can’t help it, Miley Cyrus can sing and I love her tunes. There I said it. I feel better. Feels good to confess. Still HATE commercial radio and big time label stuff though.
OK so now I dare you - what’s your guitly pleasure, come on, you’ll feel better revealing your secret.
Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro is what I’m going to try. I don’t want something to loud, want to be able to hear the little things but have the tone bass readable and adjustable. It’s had good reviews for mixing, which is what I’m looking for. I’ll let you know what i think of them.
Well - using the Shure earpods only made some hidden sound problems come to light - which is good I guess - now the rest of the band knows what they are missing - kick, snare and hat. Low end is better than expected… "Can you turn the bass down about 5 db in the submix?"
One thing I would recommend for live in ear monitoring - everyone get the same phones.
I can see by your avatar that you can get your head up yer butt. But getting a set of those IN YOUR EARS??
LOL..IF I tilt my head...maybe...LOL..
I use the V-Moda Bass ear buds for monitoring, which are good but I think they lack in terms of depth. I makes it difficult to find the right mix for bass and kick drum. Ultimately, I must use my desktop speakers at a set volume, for consistency purposes, to do final mixing, but this, due to other family members, neighbors ect, ect sound levels create problems as one expect from playing music a such levels. Also, using the speakers creates it's own problem with separation where the ear buds allow me to adjust separation. That's why I'm looking at the DT990 for final mixing.
I was interested in hearing what you had to say about your ear buds, so thank you for your opinions on the ear buds you bought.
I hear ya - I think mixing is a lot Art and a lot experience combined.
For levels I use a mono 5 inch as a final or close to final comparison. Headphones for a sub-final comparison and my mains for final. I rarely am happy with my mixes until I do the car stereo mental note taking thang. Usually way after I have posted them to the net. And I hardly ever take time to replace my net mixes. My final mixes are usually found only on my iPod after a month or so of tweaking.

Too funny....I did the same thing. Get it on CD, plunk it in the car and see what's it's like. Interestingly enough, I tested 12 sets of high end headsets and what crap they are including the HD650 senn's. I had a pair of Koss headphones years ago and they rocked. I think time has made cheap headphones a must for makers and everybody is not seeing the difference.
Even after the CD player used at the store went south I was connected to over 3 grand worth of CD and DJ mixing boards with a nice dry signal, each headphone totally sucked. I plugged in my V-moda bass headphones and they were so much better. So in the end I didn't buy any high end headphones which was my goal to solve my bass/kick issues, they were simply too "cheap" IMO. Now I was stuck with what to do in my fever to get the bass/kick sounding right in my mixes. The methods I was using were not working so I had to take a different approach.
I found if I used my speakers, z5500's (Logitech default) and tuned the volume down very low and then brought the volume up just very little to the point where I can hear clearly, then adjusting the bass and kick, this produced better results then running the speakers at a higher volume. This was confirmed after running the mix in the headphones which sounded better than I expected. Further putting that mix on a CD and out to the car also confirmed to me at least that this process worked for me. You know you got it right when it sounds good in the car, home speakers and headphones, something I have been unable to do recently, hence the "idea" of high end monitor headphone as a step in solving the issues, which of course died a quick death.
I used the V-Moda bass ear buds to set separation and to tweak track volumes and used the z5500's speakers to set bass and kick at very low volumes, just enough to hear both clearly. This for me, was the ticket. No bucks for buckless headphones this time!!. I now have good sound from the z5500's, the headphones and the car. An excellent marriage but only took 2 years to figure out..
