interface
I’ve been thinking (which is always dangerous),
about going mobile with a laptop.
Got a couple of questions.
Firewire or USB2 for audio interface
(Problem is there seems to be major upgrades for both
in the near future.)
Also seems to be some issue with which Firewire chip.
Is cardbus something I should care about.
I want to end up with a stable/fast WinXp setup
for record/playback using the likes of N, R, Samplitude,
(the not so high end stuff).
Anyone using a Presario for this kind of thing?
How many I/O do you need 7o11? I use a Tascam US-122L USB2.0 interface with my Compaq Presario V2508VM all the time. It works wonderfully (with XXXXXX) and sounds pretty doggone good. It has 2 in and 2 out (plus headphone) and MIDI I/O but that’s it. Runs 16 or 24 bit up to 96khz. A really nice little tool IMO. Very portable and easy to lug around on trips.
The US-144 is the same but adds S/PDIF I/O as well.
I bought a Presonus FireBox which is an extremely swell little unit BUT… it absolutely WILL NOT work with my laptop. I stayed on the horn with Presonus several times over several days with no luck. Gave the FireBox to my son and bought the US-122L.

I’m gonna try my tascam US122 with my new laptop a Dell Inspiron 1521. It likes ver 5 of n - I pushed it hard today mixing a 20 track project with a ton (that’s 2000 pounds) of effects and it never got over 35% of cpu and so I think I’m going to try a live session with it next weekend. I’ll let you know - if you’re not in a big hurry.

I always recommend tascam - the 144 is the new 122 - there are still some new US 122’s out there if you plan on sticking with XP. I would go with the 144 now though.

do just fine for me + it has MIDI I/O too.
Ohh! and the price is nice too.
Actually I have my sights on a
HP F750US Presario - which can be downgraded to XP.
It aint easy but there’s a thread with zipped XP driver package.

It does not have FireWire, so this (122L USB2) is good news.
The Presario can not be upgraded (except for memory)
2gig should be OK?
The folks on the above forum seem to think it’s a
very fast XP laptop.
Anyway I’ll continue to mull this over, 'cus I don’t want to
spend a bundle and end up with squat.
