Live drums

Finally got around to trying to record drums. This was done with a couple of Nady small condensers through an M-Audio DMP3 into a Roland VS-840GX. The mics were set up about 6 feet directly in front of the drum set, which sits up on a platform. In n-Track, I added 3db at 90Hz, and just a slight amount of compression with the n-Track compressor. (Since this is an n-Track forum, figured I should use the product as much as possible…lol) I also used PSP Stereo Enhancer. For some reason, there are sudden momentary shifts in the stereo field in a couple of places. The stereo enhancer made them less noticable, but still there.

There was no click track or any music to play along with, so it was just Justin coming up with an uptempo beat for me to do something with. Any thoughts on how this turned out, or how to improve getting a stereo recording of this kit would be appreciated.

Google the Recorderman method. The Recorderman method will ensure your kick and snare sound dead center in the stereo field as well as making sure the phase is correct between the two mics. And yeah, it sounds like you have some real problems with the stereo image. It floats all over the place. I wonder if you didn’t have a bad connection somewhere as the left side seems to drop out.

There ya go.

Great technique. I learned to mike drums from one of the best, Gary S. Paxton. I havn’t had to in years though - shame.
