any recommendations
Hey guys,
I’m looking for recommendations on live looping machines. You know, the kind you’ve seen guys who are solo acts use to lay down a rhythm loops and then solo live on top of the loops. I’d really like to get one to experiment with/perform with, but I really know nothing about it.
What do you think?
Matt
The two I would look at: if you are a drummer the Roland SPD-S. I use it live all the time and it is perfect for adding rhythm tracks. For general purpose, look at the Korg Electribe ES-1 sampler. Same thing essentially as the Roland, but designed as a table top unit.
I guess what I ment was looping live rhythm guitar and soloing over that, and maybe even layering several guitars in the loop live. Will those two work for that application?
Matt
Oh, no, not for that… In that case look at a Boomerang or a Boss DD20.
My son had a Boomerang…it’s up on the roof. There’s no way I’m going up there to get it down (two stories - tile roof - slippery as heck). He’ll just do without until we have a real good wind storm, and even that might not bring it back down.

Phoo, they always come back. That’s the basic design principle.
Unless of course it hits a kangaroo.
'Cos then you’re hoping that your bameroong, which is stuck in the head of a 400 lb, really pissed off marsupial capable of disembowelling a human with one kick, stays as far away as possible.

If you want to start off with something that is FREE and also very good, download ambiloop - up to eight stereo or mono looping tracks with individual volume, pans, forward/reverse and (limited) speed control. All mixing and transport controls can be controlled via midi, so you can use a foot controller too. There is a yahoo group where you can get support from the authors and other users. The group is also a good place to get the latest software versions.
Enjoy,

Nice to see you back Grrrl.
Boss DD5, or one of the other top Boss digital delays.
Some of em have tap tempos as well.
Hi Matt,
If you have an experimental inclination, you could try one of the modular programs around (I’m addicted to Plogue Bidule but there are more).
You can build your own custom live-looper with these, that does exactly what you want it to do. No more no less.
Thanks Ali. - Just popping out of the woodwork for a minute.
Has anyone around here tried the new digitech looper? I also forgot to mention a site that is good for people experimenting with looping - www.loopersdelight.com
Peace,

I just seen Phil Keaggy last Saturday night and he is the master on looping rythmm, bass, drum beats (via pounding on a guitar) and soloing and even see him do backup Harmony’s on it by singing into his guitar. He plays an Olson and he must have a mic in there to pic it up. He is amazing.
I believe he uses a Lexicon Jam Man and I think that he also uses a Line 6 echo. Check it out. He also uses alot of older ibanez and boss pedals.
