METERING THE INVISIBLE  -  PART 2

distortion free CDs

while the recently introduced Stillwell inter-sample meter is raising more questions than i have answers for, the S.S.L inter-sample meter has proved to be enlightenibg to say the least -

i can only go by what i have either imported or recorded into a song -

the outcome seems to be that -3db on input, output and anything in-between is the highest level that can be used to prevent inter-sample distortion occuring both within a song and in the resulting CD -

if lOUDNESS is all you are after and the quality of the CD is imaterial then stick to 0db -

if quality is your goal then -3db seems to be the (magic) level not to exceed -

i can see inter-sample metering or direct sample metering will become standard in all top DAWs soon, this metering has opened many peoples eyes (and their ears) to distortion that is present on CDs that cannot be accounted for using conventional means -

weve all heard of the saying “the cats whiskers” this plugin shoukd be called the KATZ ears -

Dr J. Thanks for this and the other thread you got going on the inter-sample clipping problem. Before that discussion, I had no idea there was a problem. So I tried all 3 meters recommended on some of my mixes, and was surprised that this problem did not exist. The difference is I think, is that I use the GranComp3 plugin from BuzComp as a quick and dirty master compressor/limiter and set the limiter section to -0.3db. The GranComp3 is part of their freeware set.

...and well worth the download IMO. I use the Grancomp's pretty often.

I think any limiter set at - .3 will do the trick - since if I understand the problem, that level is too low to produce interstample clipping.
