There is a check-box somewhere…
Well, I just full of questions tonight. According to the n-track manual there is a check box that must be checked to activate automated volume control using the volume envelope that you can draw in the timeline view. Where is the box? The manual implies that it is on the midi settings panel, but I can’t find the check-box anywhere. I know that this has been described in a fairly recent thread, but I can’t find that either sigh. So, a little help please…
EDIT: FOR MIDI TRACKS, there is a check box that must be checked to activate automated volume control using the volume envelope that you can draw in the timeline view.
I think you can get a drop-down box from the Enveope symbol in the upper tool-bar.
Or… Click on all the menu items… sheesh- I forget! But it’s there! If you do those two things, you’ll find it allright! I think the first idea is it.
Hey, no need to thank me!
EDIT: Oi! It’s late. I didn’t see the MIDI reference. Gawd… I’m sorry dude! Wasted your time. May a thousand young and beautiful women show up dancing at your doorstep, singing in loud, joyful voices the answer to your question!
Heh… Peace.
Preferences–> Options tab–>“Allow automated volume/pan for wave tracks”.
Is that what you’re looking for?
Mark A and Sloom… Sorry for the lack of details and unclear question.
What I was trying to do was to draw envelope controls on a midi track that was controlling a VSTI (Crystal Synth in this case) so that I could swell and diminish volume without going back to the midi file to set the velocity for each note. The n-track manual has a rather confusing section (apparently describing a checkbox) that says: "This allows the volume and pan of midi track to be programmed drawing on the track (after having clicked on the volume icon on the toolbar)."
Volume envelopes drawn after setting
Preferences–> Options tab–>“Allow automated volume/pan for wave tracks”
seem to have no effect on midi control of the Crystal or daHornet VSTIs.
Maybe I expect too much, but then what is the manual talking about?
Tim
So you’ve added a MIDI track and pointed it at a Vsti.
Then you’ve clicked on the volume drawing icon and selected “Effects Parameters” and selected the appropriate parameter (eg Volume), and then drawn th evolution.
And it doesn’t work?
I’ve only done this a few times but it has worked. I don’t recall having to do anything else specifically.
Sorry, don’t know what else to suggest.
Mark
Well, Mark A, now I feel really slow. The solution was right in front of me, but I didn’t see it until your comments made me check things step by step. The problem was simply that when I clicked on the ‘draw volume envelope’ icon I then always chose ‘draw volume envelopes’ which was at the top of drop down list of options. If I had just looked more carefully at the list I would have seen ‘Groups/Instr. volume’ further down.
Mark A – I’m starting to feel a bit like I’m your apprentice (and a slow one at that)… Thanks once more for the help.

Glad to be able to help. I’ve been around n-Track for 5 or 6 years now, and I’ve been in software development even longer.
Sometimes things are obvious to those of us who think in a certain way or have certain experiences but to others, not.
It’s only a stupid question if you don’t ask it (or at least try to work on the solution for yourself).
Keep at it. Next time someone asks a question about this stuff, you’ll be the guru!.
I usually skip all that grief and agony by rendering the MIDI track to audio and doing my volume automation on the audio track. Involves more work though if I have to go back and edit something in the MIDI track… I should explore these things a little more I guess. Might save me some extra work… Nice thread fellas. Thanks!

That’s what I tend to do too, D.
I find it easier to work with one kind of track (ie all wav) when I’m mixing. As you say it means you have to go back to the MIDI to fix things, but sometimes I just cut-and-paste the wav instead jsut like any other track.
