Advice on proper MIDI to PC operation

Here is another rookie question. About two weeks ago i connected a USB MIDIMAN EDIROL UM 1X from my MIDI to my computer. I have tried all of the toolbar commnands concerning MIDI connection and still cannot get my keyboard to transfer any notes whatso ever. I have tried preferences/MIDI/MIDI DEVICES but can’t seem to connect the dots.

i know theres a button motown that lets ya record with mic/midi,the icon or button will look like either a mic,a piano keyboard,or both,hope this helps,
