MIDI copy & paste

Hi, group–

I’m having trouble doing a multiple-paste with the Piano Roll. If I paste one copy of a selection, it works fine. But if I paste-multiple, an extra beat is inserted.

I’m working on a song in 2/4, the drums come in on 2.

The “pattern-paint” tool is nice, but since it won’t automatically scroll to the right when I try to continue on, it’s inefficient.

If you understand what I’m talking about and can help, I’d be grateful.

Cheers,
Fuggle

This may have happened to me once before....

I think it was because I was not completely clicked out of the copy function, so when I pasted it also pasted a copy over the original, depending on how one looks or (listens) to it it would sound like there is and "extra beat" as you describe.

IT took me a while to get the hang of it, to know exactly where to paste the beat so it would be in sync by counting measures and the "beginning" of the beat and making sure there were the same amount of spaces in front of the second beat from the given line (the measure line which is broken up into smaller sections) if you zoom in and out you can see the various divisions in the time line.

You say the beat comes in on 2, would that be measure two or beat two?

The reason I ask is it is unusual for a beat to come in on two of anything, usually it comes in one 1, first beat of the first measure (minus whatever count in there is at the beginning)

It would be helpful to know the BPM, or you could upload the midi file to the net and we can look at exactly what the problem is.

Jeremy,

Thanks for your reply.

After working with the piano roll editor for a while longer, I’ve concluded that there’s definitely a problem (a bug) with its display mechanism.

I’ll upgrade to the latest build and see if the problem goes away before trying to involve anyone else further.

Thanks!

If there is a bug you need on older version not a newer one! lol

As the newer one may also contain the "display bug", I have been using 5.1.1 for over a year now and have not seen anything unusual in the midi piano roll, as I copy and paste beats frequently without issue.

It is easy to paste a part in the wrong spot if you do not count beats (the little boxes) and measures (the bigger boxes) correctly also if you do not have the beats per measure selected at 16 or better you won't even see the other smaller boxes.
For instance, if it is 2/4 at 120 BPM and it is only displaying whole notes per measure you wouldn't see the line for the 2nd 8th note, or the 3rd....they simply won't be there, and when you go to paste it will automatically put the next part at the nearest line that is there (even if it overlaps a previous beat).

Yeah, Jeremy–I remember using old versions and not experiencing the difficulties I’m experiencing now.

I’d love to get opinions from people who are using the latest version, before I call in the wambulance.

Any up-to-date-users have a go with MIDI? Is the midi window not supposed to refresh? Is paste-multiple supposed to paste on a beat further than a single paste? Anyone…?

F

I still think you may have to provide the midi file for the “up to date” users to look at see if they can duplicate the problem on their system, if they can’t with the same file and version it may be something exclusive to your system.

I have never pasted multiple, sounds like it would me efficient tho if I could, I tend to just zoom in on the time line and put the time line on the exact note where I want the beat to be pasted, over and over…it is tedious, but I tend to move things around a bit (like the snare slightly forward 3/10ths of a beat, and the kick back 2/10ths here and there to give it a more human feel, so doing it part by part is just part of that tedious process.

I've had some issues with the piano roll not refresh on selections recently.
I just haven't messed with enough to get a consistent behavior.
I haven't tried the multipasting in awhile, I end up looping and editing the individual loops.

Jerm is correct.
In the piano roll - (arrow tool for select) lasso your selection.
Try the demo song (midi track one) You’ll see the selected notes change to
unfilled outlined. Then I hit CTL/C to copy. I also select BEAT for the grid.
You can expand the grid (horizontal) by holding down the CONTROL KEY while you scroll the mouse wheel. Hold CONTROL and SHIFT + scroll wheel to adjust vertical AND horizontal zoom. OK so Select, CTL/C to copy, then
move your mouse cursor to the BEAT where you want to paste (on the MIDI timeline above the grid - cursor will turn to a HAND) Left click on the timeline to set the cursor postition. Then right click mouse for paste options (paste, multiple paste) NOTE: I have found that
multiple paste produces one less copy than the number selected.
So then hit paste. At this point your pasted notes will be unfilled outlines, and you can select with mouse cursor to move the pasted notes (fine placement)
