Is anyone here using bi-amped active digital reference monitors? Brand? TOSlink? Coax SPDIF? In conjunction with which sound card? Cost? Likes/dislikes?
Time to upgrade the old monitors and power amp combo. Open to other ideas if anyone cares to share.
Hi duffman:
In he studio I have several types of Monitoring systems.
They range from Altec Lansing Desk-top computer monitors that are bi-amped to Yorkville Powered/Bi-Amped Near/Mid Field Monitors and along with them, I use a JBL Bass bin from 125 hz. and downward.
The Yorkies are the YPM-1 Powered monitors…
I think that’s what they’re called… Do a Search for * Yokville Sound * and see what comes up…Anyway, these speakers are great…
IMO…
that is…
You know…
it’s not what you listen to…
It’s what you get used to listening to…
You know, it’s been so long sense I’ve been in the studio…
I’m not sure if I can find my way in there…
Bill…
Some looking around a local store came up with the new M-Audio EX66. Digital or analog ins. As these where in a local Guitar Center store not sure how they really sound as the place is noisey as hell.
Also listened to KRK RP6s.
My thoughts with looking for digital monitors is the Spdif out should cut down on any latency due to D/A conversion in the output stage.
Now does anyone know of a headphone amp/distribution that accpets Spdif?

There is a slight flaw in your thinking. Going out via S/PDIF versus analog will make no difference latency wise. The S/PDIF is digital and still has to be converted to analog somewhere. One downside to such an approach is you would throw a different set of D-A converters characteristics into your chain. It may or may not be that big of a deal unless the converters are lower in quality than your primary sound interface. A Grace Designs m902 (I think that's the model) has excellent converters onboard and accepts S/PDIF but holy cow... that thing is expensive!
I wound up buying Event TR-8's for nearfield monitoring connected via balanced TRS cables to my EMU1820M. They are powered speakers and sound great. Nice and flat. I just use the front headphone jack on the 1820M for using cans.
