My guitar needs work

and so does Paully Shore

I need some advice on getting some work done on my guitar.
I have a Gib L-6 Deluxe (ha the Deluxe was the crappy L-6),
But I did not have the internet to check such things when
I bought it some time in the 70’s.
But I love the neck on this thing, full 24 fret.
I want to get it re-fretted, new tuners, and new pick-ups.
Oh, and I need a new bridge, 'cus I took it in to a shop,
one time and the sucker took my orginal bridge, and replaced
replaced it with a repro.
So, what do I do first? refret? what pickups, and what tuners?
Major pitfalls?
TIA

I’m sure there are guitar players on here that can give more and better advice than I can. I’ve been wanting to replace the tuners on my Ibanez, and after reading in their forum, Gotoh seems to be recommended. As far as pickups go, I remember reading a review of different brands in a guitar magazine a few years ago, and the Bartolini pickups sounded like winners. Of course, what constitutes good sound is in the ear of the beholder, so the more research you can do the better.

good site for pickup reviews

Thanks Kev

Think I’ll try tuners and pick-ups, then see if it’s worth re-fretting.

BTW - two great suggestions for Road Trip JB BbyB and ELP

Hi sevenOfeleven:

That’s pretty “Tasty” work you are considering…

If it were my guitar… I contact Gibson…
I think they are in Nashville now…
Anyway, I’d be contacting them to see what a factory repair would set you back…
A '70’s model is vintage and approaching antique now…
I wouldn’t be letting anybody be doing that kind of work on that guitar…

Bill…

Yep - even back in 76 we started gettin’ restoration jobs - some pretty sweet old guitars came through there. I have no idea what they charge but the work is first class.

What - you used to do restores?

Does it matter what it sounds like if it doesn’t play well and in tune? :)

I suggest this order:
1) Neck work - Frets/Nut/Bridge
2) Tuners - keeps it in tune once it gets there
3) Pickups - good stuff

Get it playing in tune before worrying about the pickups, because the sound is mostly coming from the wood and playing technique. The pickups will change gain and tone (the tone control kind), but the basic harmonic structure comes from the strings vibrating, and that’s the physical stuff.

No I didn't do them - I was in final assembly / testing. I got to play a lot of them when they went back out.

Makes sense.

Oh god. Just made me think of
'Stop Making Sense' David Byrne.

Yes, I will defiantely start checking on getting
'the neck physicals' correct.
OK, yeh - that's the way to go.
:)
